I just installed some new stainless steel Nerf bars on my truck. In a few places they have fine scratches. Can anyone help me out with what will take these out. I tried 3 or 4 things in my arsenal but even though it helped it still needs the magic bullet. Thank You!

Stainless

Stainless is a very hard material. It is harder than regular steel.

Try some abrasive chrome polish first and see if it gets them out. Most stainless is about 18% chrome. I doubt that it will get the scratches out.

The next option is to go to Lowe's tool section or order a metal polishing compound and wheel from the web.

go to enkaypolishing.com and browse

You will need to select the correct compound and wheel for stainless.

DO NOT use this stuff on anything but bare metal. It will cut through paint or chrome plating immediately! This is the method chrome plating shops use to remove old chrome. Make sure the nerf bars are stainless and not chrome plated, or you can get into trouble.

There are several compounds available, but they tell you what metals they are for.

You may need to polish the entire nerf bar to avoid polishing differences.

Thank You Texas Dan!!! I appreciate the info!

dinkydow: Great name! Haven't heard that since I was in the 101st Airborne Div. in the 60's!

I recommend starting with the least aggressive product first if they are only fine scratches. There are some good products around locally at auto stores: Meguiars NXT Metal Polysh (goofy spelling, but that's whats on the jar), Mother's Billet Cream, Wenol Blue. Those are very mild products that can be applied with an mf towel or a cotton buffing wheel on a drill attachment.

If that doesn't do the trick, Texasdan has some great advice on products and process.

Good Luck on your job...post some pics if you get a chance.

Yes, I am sure you know where I got the name "Dinky Dow". I took it because there usually isn't anyone else with that name so It is easier to register and Choy Oy I will leave for another time. Thanks for info!!

Roger that on the "Choi Oy"....or Di Di Mau LOL

Holler if I can help you with the stainless project.

Stainless

The stuff I'm talking about is for stuff deeper than just "swirls" in stainless. If its just swirls, this is probably overkill.

I thought I would try some Multi-surface finish restorer by P21S. I have some so I thought I would see what happens.
