Scratching the car with Rinseless/Waterless wash?

In my opinion, waterless washes and rinseless washes (not sure what the difference is...) are a joke. I used to quick detail my car when it was slightly dirty, like a little bit of dust accumulated, but not anymore. I noticed new, but very light, scratches appearing. I knew it was from wiping my car down with the QD spray because the scratches were in straight lines, no circular swirls.
If my car is a little dusty and I feel like cleaning it up, I'll hose it down very thoroughly and then use a QD spray and wipe the car down using straight lines.
I'm very fond of the good ol' 2 bucket method and a hose. I think all the waterless washes are for the eco-junkies out there. I use lots of water when I wash my car. Ain't nothin' like the old-fashioned way.

It is all in techniique. I havent scratched either of my vehicles with ONR. I usually rinse the vehicle first and then use a garden sprayer of UWW+ to presoak before the ONR. I use very plush MF as my wash media. I use a seperate plush MF to dry each panel.

I agree. I highly recommend the dean tech. Never had problem with the products I use. I did small write up on the winter trip and my 300 and rise less waterless combo. Worked great.

Dirty Black Nissan Titan - soft paint. Previously corrected, still needed polish with a DA. You can notice some hologram - no fillers.
Sprayed with Ultima Waterless and waited a few minutes
Wiped with Cobra purple towel, always using a clean side after each swipe.

I haven't used 2 bucket wash for past 6 months.
My waterless is Blackfire, Pinnacle w/carnauba and Ultima Waterless for several vehicles.

Seems like every time this thread comes up it is the same thing. There are two types of people, those that tried ONR and those that haven't. Those that have know it works and those that haven't already determined that It will not work.

Makes sense, lol. Personally, I'm not willing to try it. I've even seen Chemical Guys take a DIRTY Audi, spray it with the Eco wash stuff and then wipe it clean. The car was clean, but I seriously can't imagine that zero scratches were instilled into the clear coat.
I'd rather play it safe and use a hose, a foam gun, 2 buckets, 2 wash mitts, and know that I've greatly reduced the chances of putting scratches back into the clear coat. Been using that method for some time now and I even dry my car using a large, damp microfiber towel and some detail spray on each panel, and so far, I've seen no new scratches. I can look at my paint out in the full sun and see zero swirls or scratches aside from what I know is already there (i.e. scratches I couldn't polish out).
Honestly, I can't knock waterless washes because I've never tried them, but I was getting into quick detailing my car with a QD spray, only when my car was very lightly dusty (usually a day or two after the main wash), and even then, I was putting some very light scratches back into the clear coat, but I later removed those.

I use Griots towels for waterless wash and have not had a problem.

:iagree:+ Not everyone has ability to use a hose in their city. If used properly, rinseless wash has many advantages.
1) You use very little water. A commodity to many, but in California it is against the law in many cities to wash your car with a hose.
2) You can wash your car in the comfort of your garage. Great when it's 20F or 110F outside.
3) Great on classic and vintage cars that are prone to rust.
so unless your have cookie dough soft paint or go 4x4 mudding on the weekends, ONR is the ticket to save time and effort.
Learn to master the method and you will NOT marr or stratch your paint.
Methods like presoaking your car with a garden sprayer or the Garry Dean method just makes ONR that much better.
There about 10-15 high end car wash/detailers in my area. ALL use ONR or some form of rinseless for the majority of washes. Of course the pressure washer comes out when the F-250 with 38" tires comes with cake on mud.
Even if there wasn't a water restriction, I refuse to take out the hose, soap, and bucket to wash any of my cars or customer cars. ONR is just so much easier.

I'm scared to death to use waterless on my black Tundra. I'm actually afraid to wash it by hand at all. Since I've had it (sept of 2012) I've only rinsed it with the car wash soap and water. Not that it matters, haven't had a chance to correct my paint yet and it's full of swirls. I take it to the car wash and rinse it off and it's still full if dirt and grime. Scared to put that mf to it because of scratching the soft paint.
With frequent water restrictions in my area, ONR and UWWP are the only way I am able to keep my vehicles clean when restrictions are in place. I've been using ONR for years without issue.
I even use the products on my black corvette without issue. If you know anything about corvette paint, you know how easy it is to scratch and how hard it is to correct.
I turned a coworker onto ONR, and he has not used a traditional wash in years. He likes the convenience and ease as opposed to a traditional wash.

How do you dry it? Air blower?
I would worry about water spots. Test the waterless/rinseless on a rental, a buddy's car that doesn't care, co-worker, family. This will bui.d up your confidence, true that Black is more visible to any scratches but at least you get experience.

I use ONR on both my cars as a quick way to keep them clean between regular washes.
I pretreat with a spray bottle with 32:1 ONR and use really plush MFs to wipe the panels down. One car is white and I haven't seen any increase in marring over the light dealer swirls I haven't fixed yet. The other is metallic blue and the paint is soft. The car has minimal marring but I can't blame it just on ONR.
On my white car you can watch the dirt get encapsulated and run right off the paint when soaking the panel with pre-treat solution. So that gives me the confidence that ONR works as advertised.
