I'd like to add a sealant. The car has always been garaged. So paint seems to be in good shape. Have wax car regularly.
I wax about a week ago do i need to remove wax before adding sealant?
Will using Dawn to wash be enough, then apply sealant.

If it was me that just waxed a week ago, I personally would enjoy it for awhile. Waxes will wear/erode away soon enough...Some faster than others.

Then, a dedicated car wash shampoo and a claying-session (if needed or so desired), should suffice in removal of any remaining wax.

The claying was what i was wondering about. Paint feels smooth so don't think i would need to do this. Afraid i would do it all wrong.
Thanks for reply.

If you have never used a non-abrasive paint cleaner on the paint it probably would improve the clarity (remove bonded grime and wax) in ways clay cannot, I would suggest:

  • Clay
  • Paint cleaner (like Mothers Pre-wax, WG Paint Enhancer, or equivalent)
  • Sealant of choice

I'm of the opinion that "most" finishes should be clayed at least one annually.

Claying removes those particulate that become embedded in the paint and for the most part will remove what remains of sealants and waxes that might remain.

After a thorough washing, claying an entire car takes no more than 45 minutes so it's time well spent.

Here's what I use and you will not mess anything up!

Great stuff as usual, Bobby. So glad to hear that claying may take up to 45 minutes. I had seen a couple of posts here that mentioned 10-20 minutes of claying time and I wondered if I was being too slow or meticulous since it usually takes me between 35-45 minutes.

Some breeze right through a clay job while other prefer to take their time.

Claying times are dependent on

  1. Thoroughness
  2. Finish condition
  3. Experience
  4. Square footage of surface ie the larger the vehicle the more time it takes.

I did a Toyota Camry the other day and I think it took be 30 minutes or so....

Thanks, getting me on my way and which products in correct order.

if you applied wax a week ago, wait until its about done, otherwise you really just wasted

I am going to seal my daily driver this weekend with fk1000p, and wax it with Collinite 845..
This car was bought in late december 2011, and has since not been sealed/wax. I just finished a road trip, and the car is pretty filthy, so wash-clay-compound-polish-seal-wax is in order.

What is a good polish to use before applying BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond sealant?
Thanks again.

If you just want a bit of cleaning up then: BLACKFIRE Gloss Enhancing Polish, prewax polish, car polish is great before the sealant. It won't take out much but does a nice job of filling and really does look wet.

This is with nothing but the gloss enhancing polish:
