Hey Mike, I applied two coats of menzerna polyseal to my vehicle the other day and let it cure the required time. However, over the next two days it rained very hard and when I inspected the car there was virtually no water beading and the paint surface felt rough like there wasn't any protection on it. Is this normal with any sealant after a hard rain and should I reapply?

Thank you, Flex

No that's not normal in most cases.

Have to wonder what's in the rain?

Car parked outside all the time? Like under a tree or something?

Just to note, sometimes water beading can be skewed by a number of factors, like dirt or dust on the car. How the water lands on the car, etc.

Maybe wash it lightly and carefully and then after drying the car, spray water up into the air so it lands on the paint like rain and see how the water beading looks.

For what it's worth, water beading is a bad thing as it can lead to water spots "in" the paint. That's no fun to remove.

It use to be a few wax companies would make waxes that sheeted water instead of beaded water but the masses like to look at the pretty water beads and the consensus among the masses is if there's no water beading there's no protection.

So I think everyone is making products that make water bead.

Menzerna products are good.

Also, how was the paint prepped before applying the sealant?

And what is the exact name of the product? Some of their waxes are cleaner/sealants while others are finishing sealants.

There's a difference.

:)

Thank you for the quick reply! My car is parked outside all the time but not under any trees. The prep work that was done was washing then claying the vehicle. Then Menzerna Power Lock Polymer Paint Sealant 16 oz was used to seal the paint. Also, when I say it rained hard I mean it rained hard to redneck wash a car so mabye after two days of pretty much raining all day it took the sealant off? idk? Regardles, I will check the weather next time before hand, put two coats on, and let them each cure for 12 hours in between. Sound ok to you Mike?

Just a couple of comments....

Washing and claying are great first steps especially for a new car or for a car in new condition.

If the car is older then washing and claying is good but adding the application of a fine cut polish or a paint cleaner AFTER claying is even better as it does a better job of preparing the paint to accept the wax.

  1. What are you working on?
  2. How old is it?
  3. What condition is the paint?

For those that reading this that don't live in South Florida... when it rains hard here it RAINS HARD.

Can I get an AMEN from someone that lives here too?

This is coming from a guy that live most of his life in Oregon where it rains a LOT.

It doesn't come down in buckets it comes down in 55 gallon drums!

I'm not kidding, when it rains here in Stuart, just down the road from you its almost biblical.

And while water beating against a freshly waxed finish shouldn't have a huge effect, in this part of the country I think "yes" the hood, roof and trunk lid sitting outside under the full effect of a hard rain can diminish a coat of wax or even sealant.

Not remove it, but take away some of the BRISK water beading I call,

Tight, tall and small

Regardless, I will check the weather next time before hand, put two coats on, and let them each cure for 12 hours in between. Sound ok to you Mike?

Me?

I do a great job of applying one coat. Then as time goes on apply a second coat, this is called regular maintenance. Even if you just focus on the horizontal panels as they take the brunt of force from mother nature.

Come to Cars & Coffee in October and introduce yourself and show me your car.

Hey Mike, my vehicle is a 1999 white bmw 323i with a clear coat that has had some serious compounding on the hood and trunk. However, the clear coat overall is in great condition. When I clayed the car I did NOT fine polish the paint afterwards. Also, I totally agree and give you an AMEN from Port St.Lucie, FL about the rain especially the last two days! Furthermore, I have attended many Cars and Coffees and will come again intruducing myself this time. Lastly, I can't wait for the next detail fest coming up!

Yeah Mike and here in Tampa we've had record rainfall. YTD at my house 55" inches of rain!! We're 20" inches ahead for the year if it doesn't rain another drop.

You guys down in SE Florida have been in a drought compared to the Tampa Bay area LOL.

I personally have never been impressed with Powerlock. Mines been gathering dust on my shelf for some time. WG 3.0 has proven itself much more durable as has HD Poxy over this summer on our families vehicles.
