Selecting a polisher

I'm looking to buy a polisher, from what I've read going with a dual action polisher is the way to go for someone with little experience. Just wondering what brand should I go for? It won't be used heavily but I don't want something that's going to break after a year.

7424 or the griots are great durable machines.They will not break on you especially if your not gonna use it all the time.my griots lasted me 3 years with everyday abuse.so I think your good.
 
If you're serious about detailing, go with the FLEX 3401...it's a true DA. If you want to "test the waters" to see if detailing is for you - then go with the PC 7424 like GSKR recommended.

The GG6 equipped with a 5" backing plate for 5.5" pads and the new GG 3" backing plate for 3.5" pads has the power/torque to handle anything you can throw at it. And, it has a lifetime warranty with excellent customer service so you'd be good to go. Later, if you really enjoy machine polishing, you can add a long throw polisher or a Flex and dedicate the GG to the 3.5" pads for tight area duty.
 
I was in a similar situation a few years ago and went the cheap route with the Harbor Freight DA. Looking back, I really think I should have spent more and gone with the GG6. While the HF has plenty of power and works very well for me, it is a bit on the crude side with lots of vibration and it's pretty loud. Should the HF ever die, the GG6 will be my weapon of choice.

The Flex is an amazing tool by all accounts, but as someone who only maintains my personal vehicles and only breaks out the DA twice a year, I simply can't justify the price. IMHO, the Porter Cable and Griots DA's are perfect for the semi-annual detailing fanatics.

Sounds like you're only detailing your own vehicles. Is this correct?


If so, go with the Griot's 6" DA Polisher. Lots of power, great warranty. Lots of pad options and once you hone your skill there's nothing you can't do except a full wetsand, cut and buff.

When I was evaluating a DA purchase ~5 years ago the decision I made basically came down to my experience with power tools.

If you are good with power tools in general and have the ability to finesse with them when you use them, then the Flex 3401 would probably be best for you due to the power and forced rotation (which overall saves you time). If money is an issue then the other DA's would certainly work as well.
 
I'm just doing my own truck and few other cars. Can't seem to find a griots da polisher? Just orbital or is that the same thing? New to the polisher thing

Do your reading on here, but DA's by nature are quite safe. Someone recently posted that Griot's has new videos up on their youtube page for their machine and systems.
VISITOR has great links there. I stayed in house and did the Griot's BOSS 5.5" pads and have been really happy with the setup. The Griot's is a great machine for the long haul (I've been using mine for 8+ years as a hobbyist).
 
I fully support the idea of going with the GG6.

I went from that after my porter cable died (mind you after 12 years of faithful service), and am happy with this purchase.

It definitely has more power, and much less vibration which does wonders in terms of managing fatigue. Adding that with the lifetime warranty really makes this tool a great item to have for those of us who take care of our personal cars mainly.

Same here! Sold my G15 and have 2 GG6's now. One for 5.5 inch BOSS pads,one for 4" LC Flats. As soon as they AGO gets them in I'll be ordering the new 3" plate and BOSS 3" pads. Only pad color I found I never use is the Yellow BOSS. The orange finishes great. Also never found a use for the Perfecting Cream but really like the Fast Correcting and Correcting Creams. The Finishing Sealant is a great AIO,not HD Speed great but still impressive with a orange pad.
