I have a problem with my paint. It bubbled out, peeled, and fell off. It is down to the metal. I have primer, factory matched touch up paint, and clearcoat. Would it be possible to fix it with these? Any help into fixing the problem would be appreciated.

Welcome To Autogeek Online!

With a little time and effort, touch-up paint can be used to "improve" this defect.

Will you be spraying or brushing on the primer and paint?

I agree it can be touched up, but there is a more serious issue at hand. The paint isn't properly bonded to the underlying coat. It appears maybe its basecoat underneath, and the clearcoat is failing.

Do you know if its factory paint, or if its been repainted?

More than likely the issue will continue, and your best option for longevity is to have it stripped and repaired properly.

I was thinking about using the brush that came in the touch up bottles. Also, this is a salvage car and I believe those two doors were repainted. I don't know for sure though because my uncle took care of repairs. How do I tell if it is factory paint or repainted?

I'd see if your uncle knows, or take to a reputable bodyshop. Any painter should be able to tell a repaint from factory.

From the pictures, it looks like it was a repaint. The issue is you can touch it up now, but it might eventually peel again somewhere else. I understand not wanting to pay a lot for a prior salvage vehicle, so try the touchup.

The touch up will require a lot of time and patients for it to look good.

Okay, I applied multiple layers of base coat with the brush. Should I add more layers of base coat or just add clear coat? The touch up bottle states not to use rubbing compound until after clear coat is added. My plan is tomorrow to add the clear coat. After I add clear coat will the rubbing compound make the surface smooth?. I attached images for my progress. The paint was still wet when I took pictures. Also, I have Langka blob eliminator if you guys think I should use it for smoothing out surface.

I hate to say it, but from the looks of that picture, you have your work cut out. I don't believe Lanka with smooth out that blob. Looks like you have a lot of sanding to do. One suggestion is to tape around the repair so that you don't remove too much surrounding clear. Remove the tape to do the final leveling.

Here are some better images with it dry. If I sand it, will it not put scratches into the base coat? Also, what grit would you use to sand it?

Yes, it will put sanding marks and that's why you need to compound and polish. Being so rough, you need something aggressive (600-) and work up to 1500-3000. Are you planning to clear coat the base coat?

Yes, I will add clear coat to the base coat. Also, should I put on a last base coat after sanding then add the clear coat? If I do add another base coat, what is your recommendation for how long after I should add clear to base because the bottle says I can add the clear coat 30 minutes after last layer of base coat.

Try looking for a paint that already has the clear in it. It will save you a lot of time, Dr. Chip maybe.

Also, do you think there is enough basecoat before I sand or should I add more base to make it level to the existing paint, or will the clear coat make it level to existing paint?

The color coat needs to be higher than the surrounding paint in order to wet sand flat. The clear will go over a level surface. There is no way to fill the area flat with clear.
