Hey so I tried out my cheapo polisher today and it turned out not to bad, just tried it on the side door for practise and see.

But I had a few questions that came up.

Are polish generally used for swirl marks and compounds for scratches?

Also what should the DA polisher foam pad look like when moving. I wasn't sure if I was applying to much pressure and then there was no work being done since it stops spinning. And at how fast is going, I'm just curious if there's a way to tell you putting to much pressure and no work is being done.

What type of "cheapo" polisher do you have???

Make a mark or a tape line on the backing plate. This way you see if it spinning. Often a light pressure is only needed and let the pad and polish do the work.

In general yes light swirls and wash or clay marring a polish would correct it. Then a compound take out the more deeper defects. If the scratch is caugth on your finger nail it's through the clearcoat and wont be compound out. You can be smoothing the scratch edges down a little so it's not so visible. Then you have the hardness of the clearcoat on your car that can be you would need a more aggressive setup. And if your car has a soft clearcoat you can get heavy defects out with a polish and a light cutting pad.

Ok good idea, I'll put a piece of masking tape on it next time I give it a go.

A permanent marker works better. If the backing plate is yellow use black, if it’s black use silver.

Also 15 lbs of pressure and arm speed at 1 inch per second. Work clean and clean pads often.
