Shipping peanuts and static electricity

When you place an order you can ask / request not to have the peanuts used. Place in comments section. They will use a package paper which you will be able to recycle. I used it last time I placed on order, (finally remembered to request paper). Worked out great. The items were in the box and they didn't move around / leak, etc. I'll use this in the future, as long as I remember. Maybe AG could put it into there system who uses / requests paper over peanuts?

That's great, I didn't know there was an option for it. Thanks.

I think if requesting paper over peanuts then it is our responsibilty if their is a leak. I will continue to order peanuts and start giving them to the usps down the street instead of just stacking them up.

If you request paper over peanuts and there is a leak how is it your responsibility? You have no control of how the box is handled either way. The box with the paper may leak through to the outside vs the box with the peanuts may absorb the leaked material. The responsibility lies with the shipper. In that case notify AG they can put a claim in with the shipper and workout the details, meanwhile there customer service in the best and they will / should send out a replacement of the damaged container(s). :xyxthumbs:

True (It is the responsibility of UPS) but you already know in the real world that they handle it like a pinball so you have to move forward with that knowledge

I have never had a leak with the peanuts so if I was specifically to request paper and they were to honor my request and it was to leak then it would be me that requested a packaging that may be more likely to cause damage to the products. They would not have done it if I hadn't asked them too.
Anyway I think you are right in that AG would probably take care of it for you. It's just my personal opinion that they are not obligated to do so since you requested a different packing material then what they recommend.

I do understand what you are saying. I had an order packed with paper and the items were secure and packaged just as well. The items did not move or leak. There was a gallon of Amazing Roll Off inside among other items. Before I opened the box I shook it knowing that there was paper instead of peanuts inside. There was ABSOLUTELY NO movement / noise / shifting inside the box. I think that it is a great job by AG employees taking pride in there jobs and maintaining there high standard of service. AG rocks!!! Im the MAN

CieraSL keepin' it classy!

I'm tempted to ask for packing paper, but I'm afraid if my product does leak, and I notify autogeek they're just going to say: "Told ya so!"

or am I just being paranoid?
Yes you are! No way Penny (AG's superb Customer Service Rep would let that happen!

This post is spot on!
AG should consider packing paper like Griots. Bio Peanuts like Detailed Image or inflated plastic like Amazon. Meghan, if you read this thread, please talk to Max.

This is my only gripe with AG's operation!
I others agree, please post!

Paper = cutting down trees, it also causes landfills to fill up just as fast, and when it decomposes it releases methane gas. (Which BTW is a supposed "green gas house" which actually is a myth. We can go on and on about this). I am in no way a green eco nut, but I do recycle cause it keeps waste down and I get money from it. Also peanuts are cheaper than paper. I don't need the cost going up anymore. Good article to read. How Does Recycling Paper Help Landfills - LoveToKnow Green Living

I have a bag and half at the moment, myself.

It would be nice if Auto Geek switched to a more environmentally friendly packaging material. Kraft paper can be recycled and there are other kinds of "peanuts" that dissolve in water, but the styrofoam variety are likely only reused once or twice (if at all) before ending up in a trash heap somewhere.

Funny how your first post is about green/eco stuff. See post above. And the cost of eco nuts or whatever you want to call them are expensive and the cost "would be passed onto us." I don't want that cost!

I ship a lot of stuff out and recycle the peanuts all the time. If anyone don't what their peanuts they can ship them to me. I don't want AG to stop using peanuts.

+1 Gary! I do the same exact thing. :props:

Just bringing this thread back to life because I feel it's important. I had NO IDEA I could request no styro peanuts be used for my orders. They drive me NUTS. Our city even recycles polystyrene but not in peanut form... I pay by the bag for trash and peanuts are hard to give away. It would be really nice for AG to advertise (and even charge actually costs) for more renewable packaging. I would have no problem paying a reasonable fee for something better.

I actually like the peanuts! It's like an Easter egg hunt when your package arrives!! :D

I started requesting an eco-friendly packaging material several months ago, before ever seeing any threads on it. After having several boxes stack up and no where to take the styrofoam I started commenting in the comment box on all my orders to use eco-friendly packaging. You can drop styrofoam off to location that will get it to companies that repurpose/recycle it, or you can mail it to companies like Dart. I looked it up because throwing polystyrene in the trash makes me lose sleep, plus they end up blowing down the street. And even if I had room to throw them in my recycling can every other Thursday, the recycling place here would recycle them and probably send them to the landfill anyway. I have only had one thing leak from shipping with paper, and it was more the cause of the container having a seem on the bottom that was the weak link in the design. Look on Earth911 to find a location to drop off your packing peanuts in your area.
Funny story, I got a Cobra cross groove, orange cutting pad that had been on backorder and it came in its own 10" square box, filled with packing peanuts. I laughed before I even opened the box because I knew what was inside and how it was packaged. I was glad to get a the foam pad that had taken so long to get here, but not the nearly 1 cubic foot of styro-peanuts.:D
I don't understand why AG can't just use the green, biodegradable peanuts, or at least the pink ones that are from recycles material?... I will live with the paper for, as it is great for masking off a car, as long as it doesn't get wet.:D

No doubt! I always dump the peanuts out to make sure nothing is left in the box that might have been loose. When I got the pad I spoke of, I reached right in the box thru the peanuts, grabbed the pad, closed the box, and added to the collection.

Those peanuts can be a mess!
But they really save my ordered items from abuse of the shipping company which is inevitable!!

I don't mind them at all, because its because of them, I get my stuff intact and in the correct position! :)

The only time I had a package leak was a container of Microfiber cleaner fluid that cracked that was shipped from Griot's Garage. It was packed with the shipping paper that they use. I never had a leak from boxes shipped from AG packed with styrofoam peanuts.

Ask and you shall recieve!!! All you need to do is put a comment in the provided box and AG will use paper on your order.Nice brown recyclable paper!
