SHOCKED AND HORRIFIED!...."How its made" TV show!

Its been brought up a couple times about salesmen not knowing their product and this made remember this little gem, a true story.

About 6 yrs ago I was a Chrysler dealership test driving a 300C. While waiting for the salesman to come back with my license I was looking at a Cherokee SRT8 and another salesman was going over the ride with another customer. The customer asked the saleman if it had AWD and the saleman said, and I quote, "No, AWD can't handle the power this thing puts down!". The salesman walked away for a minute and I walked over to the guy and said "I'm sorry, I overheard your salesman and I've gotta show you something". I walked to the back and had him look underneath and pointed at the rearend and said "There's one differential" and then moved to the front, had him bend down and then pointed at the finned, half circular unit in the front and then said "There's the other differential", thus AWD. I told him ALL SRT8 Cherokee's have AWD, Trailblazer SS's have RWD as well as AWD options. The guy started laughing!

Then my salesman came back and he asked me what I'd like to have in my 300C and I said HIDs were a must and he said "What are HIDs?". I took the car out and enjoyed the drive but ended up getting a MINI Cooper S, not because of the saleman but rather its something I had wanted for quite some time.

It was also stated earlier about a BMW salesman calling their engines a V6, this is just as bad as the producers of "How its made" letting them call the Porsche engine a V6....IMO.

Along the same lines, it's amazing how many BMW salesmen will tell you that their cars are equiped with V-6's.

It's amazing how people can be hired to sell, document, etc a product and not be required to have ANY knowledge of the topic at hand.

OT: I'm in the process of (maybe) getting a new truck (much smaller). This past Monday, salesman looks at the engine and says, "Hmmm, 8.1 Vortec, is that a V-6?"

Should mention, this dealership is both a Toyota AND Chevrolet seller.

Don't even get me started on car sales people...

Bill

8.1 Vortec a V6, imagine the size of those pistons, LOL!

I was thinking the same thing. One of those giant Catapillar diesel generators like you see at a mine or on an oil platform came to mind

Ah who cares all boxer leak oil and have oil delivery problems because of their horizontal positioning... Get a real engine ... a rotary :D ohh thats right, nobody but mazda was able to produce a rotary, not ford not mercedes benz and so on...

You should have met me when I was a salesman at Mazda, while owning a MazdaSpeed 6 (daily) a 93 RX7 for track. and a 91 swapped miata for Autocross :) I used to love the looks on my customer faces when they tried to show off that they know about cars and mentioned the "competiion makes" which they were considering.

ahhh, miss those days lol

A Rotary engine was so good it no longer exists!

Back to topic;

I still hear "Is that a V-4?" ....i'd like to throw something heavy at some of these "car" people...

Actually v4 engines were produced, its not like theyre non existend...

It doesnt exist? since when? only reason theyre not "PRODUCED" now is because of Emissions. check out what engine owned LeMans and what car/ engine was banned from racing because nobody could touch it. Rotary is like a hot supermodel, she will always outshine all others, but you need to know how to take care of them.

The only rotary to ever win at Le Mans. It had a unique sound!

IMO, the only "car" to ever win Indy, but didn't cross the finish line. Also had a unique sound. A high-pitched whine later banned by the piston boys. The "Whoosh Mobile". Oh, well.

I later wished for something similar for the street as a solution to the "gas crisis".

Then maybe something burning hydrogen.

Now, don't consider anything with helium either 'cuz now there's a growing shortage.:awesome:

Rotory's are very efficient, no doubt about it and as far as oil goes, well never heard about them LEAKING oil...USING oil, well, that's another story, LOL! Seems like every RX8 owner carries around a quart of oil, not for "just in case" but rather "matter of time". I've come to respect the rotory engine more since 2 of my best friends whom are AG'ers (Derek0609 and Hectik) have Mazda's, Hectik has a MS3 as well as a 79' RX-7, Derek a MS3 and who knows, maybe a rotory car will be in his garage soon!

boxers leak oil not rotaries. A group of friends own and operate a performance shop and they told me ALL even brand new BRZ's and WRX, STI's come in with 500 miles on the clock, they put it on the lift and theyre already leaking oil. :IDK:

As far as rotaries i owned a 93 rx7 and yes, you need to check oil lever everytime you fill up. Add a little oil to your gas tank, so it lubricates apex seals, chenge oil every 2-3k miles and preferably use 2 stroke motor oil, i used MOTUL. Drive it like you stole it, run that engine high (thats why auto rx8's dont last) and if you start the engine you better drive it, or it will most likely flood, rev it up before you turn it off if you didnt rev high while driving to blow out the extra crap, and so on.

In short these engines are not fuel efficient at all, but very capable and track reliable, they run hotter then piston engines (About 220 F* unlike usual 180F*) so you better not get stuck in traffic in summer heat, or it will do damage to your seals.

This next rotory engine will be interesting for sure, more interesting....what's going to be wrapped around it!

Might be hybrid, not full hybrid like a prius, but battery assisted motor like CRZ, that will add Torque which theyre looking for and also bring up the mileage. I just hope its not AWD like the NSX which uses regular engine for rear wheels and batteries for front. Keep it RWD and have a Turbo :dblthumb2:

Like Derek said earlier, its funny how this thread has come full circle and now my car, the CR-Z, has made an appearance, LOL! Cool little factoid about my car is this, its the only hybrid available with a manual trans! As far as what Mazda does with the next rotory, well its too bad they don't already have hybrid technology so there's no reliabilty issues, I guess we'll see, stay tuned!

As a 991 owner, I concur. In fact, I think I counted 6 mistakes they made when talking about the car.
