Sign-up: 1966 Mustang Convertible

Maxs_New_1965_Mustang_024.jpg

Max just bought this one-owner 1966 Mustang Convertible and this Thursday Night we're going to take the paint to its maximum potential, like I talk about in this article on the exact same topic....

"Taking your car's paint to it's maximum potential"

We're only doing the exterior as I'm saving the vinyl interior and the vinyl convertible top for my upcoming Detailing Boot Camp Class.

We are going to buff out the paint and glass on this Mustang and also try to bring the tires, wheels and hubcaps back to life...

Wheels and tires... there just isn't any bling?

And the paint has no gloss, shine or reflectivity...

Re: Sign-up: 1965 Mustang Convertible

***Update***

I did a little testing using Pinnacle XMT #4 with a wool pad on a rotary buffer followed by XMT #2 with a foam pad on a Flex 3401 and if you look at the lower right hand corner you can see it removed enough oxidation and embedded dirt that the section I buffed now looks like a totally new color of red paint!

Maxs_New_1965_Mustang_025.jpg

My co-worker Jeff and I put the top down and I took this picture... pretty cool for a one-owner old Mustang...

Maxs_New_1965_Mustang_026.jpg

So tomorrow night we're going to take rotary buffers, wool pads and XMT #4 to this old single stage paint and see if we can't bring back the shine!

I'm going to need a bunch of guys for this so be here tomorrow starting at 5:00pm

Re: Sign-up: 1965 Mustang Convertible

That corner looks good Mike.

Would I ever love to be in the local area for these projects. It just may be my second home! Lol.

Sometimes I call heavy cutting with a rotary buffer, wool pad and aggressive compounding...

Chopping

As in getting in there and chopping off a lot of old, weathered paint and tell you what... I was chopping on that section...

We really have our work cut out for us, wish you could be here to help as I could use another experienced guy behind the rotary buffer.

:)

I would be in heaven working in that garage with my fellow Geeks, a PE14, and 3401. A Menzerna product line, BF line, or Wolfgang lineup to work with and 5 inch hybrids would sweetin the deal.

Sorry guys for going a bit off topic, just a little dreaming to share with everyone. :xyxthumbs:

Re: Sign-up: 1965 Mustang Convertible

Mike, this 65' convertible has 66' side trim. Are you sure about it being a 65'? One way to check is in the "Vin" # and also, the 66 has a horizonal grille. Bill's 67 GTA

Re: Sign-up: 1965 Mustang Convertible

Mike, I just checked with the "Boss", my wife, and I'll be down Thursday to work on the Mustang. I'll bring my code book with me to decipher all the codes. Bill's 67 GTA

Re: Sign-up: 1965 Mustang Convertible

Mike, in a few months I will be located in Ft. Lauderdale / Davie. You might see me more often soon :)

You're correct, it's a 1966 Mustang Convertible...

Jeff and I read through the original owner's manual and it states it right on the front that it's a 1966. Must have been a brain lapse because Max told me it was a 1966. Thanks for the correction.

Very cool Bill. Looking forward to having you to be part of the team...

Is that car from PA? It looks like a PA classic plate and PA inspection sticker.

Yes.

Going out to the studio to start getting set-up for tonight's extreme makeover.

We're going to have some guys here tonight that have NEVER used a buffer before so this is going to be a great learning experience for them.

Just finished setting up the studio for tonight's extreme makeover....

Special Sale
Nick says there will be a sales special for any of the products we use tonight on this car, which includes Pinnacle XMT polishes #!, #2, #3, and #4 and the Pinnacle XMT 180

Maxs_New_1965_Mustang_027.jpg

Learn to use the rotary buffer at Autogeek's Thursday Night Hot Car Projects
I have a number of new guys attending tonight so to teach them how to use the rotary buffer with wool pads and compounds I'll be using the Flex PE14 with Lake Country 6.5" wool cutting pads. The light weight and compact size of this rotary buffer plus the smaller size of these 6.5" wool pads makes it easy for even an absolute newbie to learn how to use a rotary buffer.

Maxs_New_1965_Mustang_028.jpg

After the heavy cutting step we're going to use the Flex 3401 to apply the #2 Fine Swirl Remover with with Lake Country 6.5" CCS Foam Polishing Pads.

Maxs_New_1965_Mustang_029.jpg

After polishing we'll be machine applying the Pinnacle XMT 180 High Gloss Carnauba Paste Wax
