This Charger is phenomenal looking except the paint has swirls. We're going to fix that. It also has matte black stripes so we're going to address the stripes to as well as the tires and the vinyl top.

Here's a picture I took of it at our local Tuesday Night Car Show.

The opportunity to touch a real 440 factory Big Block 1971 R/T Charger is non-existent anywhere in the world or via any other detailing discussion forum. If you work for Chip Foose this would be a normal project but in the normal world?

Here's a little information about this car from the owner...

  • First this is a REAL R/T car not a clone.
  • 99.9% original car.
  • Last year for the R/T model.
  • The original hood alone is incredibly rare.
  • The color is Hemi Orange.
  • The re-paint is approximately 15 years old.
  • There were approximately 3,100 cars of this specific model built and the Dodge Charger Registry only lists 500 known to exist.

Dave says he's the 6th owner of this car and although it's 44 years old it will completely light em up and throw you back in the seat when you put the pedal to the metal.

I've invited Dave to bring along any of his car buddies that would like to see how to take a finish in fairly good condition to show car status.

Thank you Dave for trusting Autogeek with your prized car possession. We'll see you here on Thursday, February 26th.

Oh man, that car takes me back. My best friend's brother when we were growing up, had a 1967 427 Vette, all his friends had hot rods. There was some serious iron in their driveway every weekend. That thing is gorgeous. Every time you post these sign up threads it makes me want to move to Florida. Can't wait to see the after pics.

Sign me up Mike it will be me and one of my co workers. I'm excited it worked out we will get to work on a MOPAR!

That is AWESOME! Where is this car located? I have never seen another one with this color combo. My father has a 71 Charger RT! His is numbers matching, 440-6pk, hemi orange, only different options look to be a ram air hood, and hide-away headlights on my fathers.

Looks like dad really likes the Hemi Orange. Those are some seriously nice cars. And a pretty nice garage as well.

It will be good to see you again my friend.

To jog everyone's memory... Matt and his Dad were so kind as to bring their beautiful 1963 Studebaker Avanti to the set of My Classic Car so that Dennis and I could use it for two segments in 2014.

Here's the thread....

Very cool indeed!

Thanks Mike,

I'm currently getting the Avanti ready for the Power Tour in June. The paint still needs more wet sanding and I'm probably going to see if I can get the Magnum 500 rims rechromed. I may just buy some Torque Thrusts.

I've been focused on mechanical stuff now it's time to get to cosmetics.

Please sign me up, Mike. Looking forward to a good evening with the team and trying to recruit a guest from the car club. Thanks!

Wish I lived in FL...

I always loved the 71-74 Chargers. The body lines always reminded me of a Coke bottle. My aunt and uncle had a light gold 73 with a 318 that they totalled back in the day. Even that big a car was no match for a snow plow in NY!

One thing I wondered about those Chargers is why there is a foot and a half of room between the radiator and the front bumper?

Is it just me?

Awesome ride anyway!

Ditto, on wishing I could take vacation days to come see this one worked on.

I've got a thing for old school Mopars from the horsepower war days. Thus one being all original is like finding a sasquatch.

All that room in front of the radiator is so you can stand in the engine bay while you work on it, LOL.

Seriously though, it made swapping cams or pulling engines a heck of a lot easier, as you didn't have to yank the front fascia.
