here is the deal i have been researching and looking at different kits that include a da. gues what there is more than one, oddly enought there is also more than one company making waxes sealants and thing i still dont understand what they o or what order to do them in. so here is what i need from those of you that know way more than I, just a little help to show me the way to buying what i need to do up keep on the 2 trucks (red) and one silver ford fusion. i have tried to keep from posting by reading and reading and in the end i am more confused than what i was when i didnt know anything. I was looking at just getting a full kit from groits but have been unable to get enoguht information to purchase, then i was going to get a 7424 kit fro auto geek with the xmt intermediate swirl remover and some soverian wax but i wasnt sure that was what i needed. the car is brand new and looks very good, the GMC is washed and waxed every month at a minimum, the ford f350 is in need of some help, oxidation and my lack of care have taken a tole on the poor thing. Please help with any ideas that you might have, what ever the group desides i will buy as i am just to confused to know anything right now. by the way i live in louisiana, if that helps any.
thanks for your help

:welcome: To Autogeek Online!

Matt,

The two kits below are great starter kits that include everything you'll need to gain both knowledge and experience. Both include dual action polishers and come with product sufficient enough to make the average car glow.

Neither of these kits contain a sealant or wax so please plan accordingly. You can always add additional products as you go along and there's no better place to buy them than Autogeek....:props:

Here's some great reading by Mike Phillips

could you recomend a sealant and a wax? i was leaning towards poorboys EX and natty blue, how ever i was also interested in the soverian( i think is its name) wax. i really dont have a budget for this adventure, i just want to be able to have th right tools to do the job right.
thanks
matt
oh and as i am getting my information from autogeek i will be purchasing from them to

I think this will be a great purchase for the money, Optimum Porter Cable 7424 Kit Remove swirl marks and paint flaws
The Optimum products are very easy for beginners to work with and produce very nice results. They are pretty mild products so there will be no worry of removing too much clearcoat during your learning curve but are effective enough to obtain the results that you will be looking for.

With this kit you will get a white polishing pad (which you will want) in addition to a medium cutting pad(orange) and a finishing pad(gray). IMO no kit is complete without a polishing pad. You get 3 quarts of product too, instead of 2 small bottles so you'll have plenty of product to work with while you learn.

You May want to order at least 3 each of 5.5 inch orange and white pads with your initial purchase as they will be more effective at removing the oxidation and swirls from your more neglected truck and will work with the 5" backing plate supplied with the kit.

The Porter Cable is a proven machine which is rarely associated with break downs and will have enough power to get the work done. (there are more powerful machines)

Just keep asking questions and keep reading the articles here and you will get it. Placing the pad to the paint however is where experience comes from so don't get too overwhelmed with what you read, you have all the members here to back you up if you get stuck. Have fun with it.:props:

Are you saying that money is not your main concern or that you have to be careful what you spend? If money is no object here you may want to look into a Flex polisher in addition to the PC kit as it will produce the results faster and save valuable time for you. Either way you go you will get it done though.

bulletproof wax fuzion for real shine collinite 845 for durability
menzerna powerlock for a sealant,

Sealant

One of the sealants I like the best is Menzerna Power Lock. This goes on nicely and my preferred method of applying it is with my Porter Cable 7424 DA with a RED Lake Country CCS or Flat pad on speed 3. This allows you the control you need to lay down just the right amount and work it into the paint as well.

Wax

There are allot of waxes to choose from. One wax I keep promoting is Collinite 845. This wax offers the best protection, high gloss, and for about $14.95 per bottle it can't be beat.

Pinnacle Souveran, Wolfgang Fuzion, Optimum Spray Wax, DP Max Wax, Poorboy's Natty, Dodo are just a few are available through Autogeek and are phenomenal products.

Carnauba

Car Wax - Carnauba Waxes- Pinnacle Carnauba Car waxes, P21s Concours Carnauba car wax

Synthetics

Paint Sealants like Klasse, Wolfang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant

Spend some time looking at some of the products offered here and try not to become overwhelmed. Take your time, start slow, and do some experimentation. :props:

what i ment by the money commment was short of $1000 i am game, i like to work with the best equipment that way i dont buy the stuff twice and spend half again as much as i would have to start with. Now with that being siad i would prefer not to spend that kinda of money right now, but if i must well then i must. i looked at that kit that yall have recomended and can only ask if i can get a general consesous from yall about waxes and sealants. My wifes car will be done as time and need show, my gmc will be done at will as it is my baby, and my f350 will be done as needed ( read once a year maybe twice ). hopefully with that information you can recommend some more great porducts.
thanks and keep the good infor coming
matt

i would do without the kit, buy everything seperately and pick & choose the exact items you want and will use...

the optimum kit looks pretty solid. A lot of people on here love most of their products. I don't think you'll ever have a general consensus on products because there are so many and everyone has their own preference. That being said, I like megs 105/205 for polishing, wolfgangs deep gloss paint sealant/poorboys ex sealant for sealants and nattys blue/souveran paste/max wax for my waxes.

i would love to be able to do such a thing as you mention BIG AL3, but the fact is i just dont know enought to even consider that. that is the reason behind this posting, as i tried very hard to not post this and sound like a newbie( which i am) but in the end there was just no way around it. I did try that two or three times but always wound up by doubles of products with different names.
matt

You might want to think about just calling AutoGeek and talk to them about what you want to accomplish. I purchased the new Groits ROB and the 5 1/2" pads and use both Meg's and Menz polishes. I have used Megs, WG, DP, BFWD sealants and waxes, they are all very good. Call AutoGeek and talk to them, they won't lead you wrong.

fairlady350z how do you like the poorboys products on your red car, i have a pair fo red trucks and was looking at thier product line for wax and maybe a sealant.
thanks
matt

rbrcs i would love to call people, how ever for another month or so it is just not possible as i am on the other side of the world and am trying to do my homework and purchase while i am gone so i can hit the ground running when i finally make it home.

Welcome aboard Matt! You will receive many different responses, but one thing you will find is that there are plenty of people who want to assist you. It can be overwhelming but don't be afraid to ask questions around here.

First let's start with the machine. Whether you buy a Porter Cable 7424XP, Griot's Garage Random Orbital Polisher, or the Meguiar's G110V2, you will want 5.5" pads. The problem with most kits is that they come with 6.5" pads. The dual action polishers listed spin smaller pads better. You will see Mike Phillips use a phrase often "Thin is in". I really like the Lake Country Hydro Tech pads. Many people prefer the standard flat pads. The best thing you can do is buy a few of each and figure out what works for you.

Next let's talk about polishes. Since you are new to this you may want to start out with user friendly polishes. Some of those include the Pinnacle XMT line, Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover and Finishing Glaze, etc. A lot of people here use the Menzerna line, Optimum line, and of course Meguiar's M105 and M205. If you know how to use M105/M205 you will have outstanding results. Some other polishes to consider are Griot's Garage and of course the Poorboy's line. A cool thing about the Poorboy's line is that Pockets from Poorboy's frequents the forum and is more than willing to help out with any question you may have.

A very important step is to wipe down the surface after each polishing step with any of the following: mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), Menzerna Top Inspection, Griot's Pre-Wax Cleaner, or even a body solvent such as Prep-Sol. This will allow you to check your work to see if you have achieved the results you desire. Mike Phillips wrote an outstanding article on mixing IPA which can be found here. I have this saved as a favorite and I highly recommend you do as well.

You asked about sealants vs. waxes. The way I look at it: If the vehicle sits outside you will want to lean toward a sealant because it will last longer. If the vehicle spends most of it's time in the garage, then you will be just fine with a quality wax. You are going to read many things talking about a certain product adding this or that to the paint, the truth is if you properly polish the paint it will be nearly difficult to see a difference between products. There are a few exceptions though. In all honesty your prep work is what makes the difference.

Now this is just my take or opinion on the whole thing. Like I said, you are going to receive many different responses. Take your time and read through responses, use the search function, and by all means don't be afraid to ask questions. If someone gets upset because you have asked a question that's been answered 100 times, then they have forgotten that they were once a newbie. Best of luck to you! :xyxthumbs:

i jst read the whole artical and it was very informative, heck i even learned what IPA stood for. Yes i am that new at this and at this forum and i am still searching for a sticky to tell me what all your little actronyms really mean. thankyou for the good information and please keep it comings as i am finally kinda understand what some of this means. Yes i also understand that i will get alot more out of putting some elbow grease into it also, but that will have to wait for a latter date. I have not heard any one mention claying the car yet and i was under the impression that it was a must. please continue to guide me as i still have mcuh to learn and understand.
thanks
matt

Welcome to your new obsession! I grew up in La. and have an 01 S10 from there so I know the damage that can occur to a paint job from all the sun, rain, pollution, and BUGS. You are off to a good start by keeping wax on your vehicles. However, regardless of what polisher or kit you buy you will need to clay your vehicle before you go polishing then laying a beautiful wax over your hard work. The Wolfgang clay has done me right and last without falling apart during use, and is pretty easy to get debris out of with out taking a lot of clay with it.
I bought the PC7424 in 05 with the XMT 4 & 1. Even though the XMT 4 is a compound it is very user friendly as long as you aren't working on thin, delicate paint or around the edges of your bodywork. I have had success with the compound not leaving too much haze behind when using it with an orange pad. Worked great after wet sanding my S10. I would recommend XMT 2 or 3 after 4 though, as XMT 1 may not get ride of the compounding haze as quickly.
The Wolfgang Paint sealant is one of the best you will find. It should hold up in the south for a good six months with regular waxing. It really keeps anything from sticking to the paint, allowing you to clean off dried bird dropping with a flick of the finger or plain water and a mf.
I have been using the Pinnacle Signature series wax since 05 and it looked great on my blue Subaru STi and my pewter(silver-ish)S10. Really made my neighbors silver-blue Town Car pop with a coat even after I applied it in the cold(Virginia winter a couple weeks ago).
The XMT glaze is not bad either. I recently used it on a beat-up S10 wheel from the junk yard after I clayed the wheels a bit and it brought back the factory shine. It is great for a quick polish and wax step before a coat of wax.
I recently used a small sample of Menzerna Power Gloss(S34A) after doing some wet sanding and compounding and it really cleaned up my work and brought out an amazing sparkle in my metal flake in the metallic pewter paint. It might actually be suited for the Ford paint you have since I think it is harder then my 10 year old Chevy paint. I would at least look at the Menzerna line and do some research on their product line. I was impressed considering the polish and shine there compound left; could have paint sealed/waxed right after it.
Hope this wasn't all to much and a little helpful. Take care down in the Deep South, and happy detailing.:buffing:

Well to be honest with you many things have been left out. I really wanted to stick with your topic. If you're looking for steps to take then consider the following:

Clean wheels, tires, wheel wells
Wash
Clay
Machine polish/hand polish
Wax or sealant

Some people wash several times, for example they will wash after claying and after polishing.

Some other helpful information that you can provide are the years of your vehicles, have the vehicles been re-sprayed or are they original, what colors are the vehicles, etc.

A number of people have talked to AG customer service and had the polisher package 6.5" pads replaced with 5.5" pads and backplate
