So I have been detailing my cars for a few years now. Im very experienced in auto detailing.

I want to start a business out of my garage.

Is this possible? Do people like to drop there cars off?

I wont be mobile, to much their and in the arizona sun is just a bad idea.

But the main question, is if I market for people to drop off their cars. Is it 'ok' to detail out of my garage.

Im not looking for full time. I own a game design company as my income. But I want to do this for extra money.

What do you guys think? Tips?

Although I am mobile I still have a few clients that prefer to drop their vehicle off at my house. Sometimes it may be due to weather concerns or other times it just happens to be more convenient for them. A few weeks ago I did an interior detail with odor removal and they wanted to smell to really get taken care of. I told them if they drop it off at my house I will just let the ozone gen run forever and they were very pleased with that proposition.

Regarding if it is "okay" to detail out of your garage... I'm sure there are probably zoning laws about running specific types of businesses from your home. It probably would never be an issue unless you have psycho neighbors that get pissed any time you "waste" water to wash a car. Then again, depending on how big your garage is, you could even wash the cars inside too.

Yes those are my thoughts. I use a rpessure washer so I dont use much water and all my neighbors are really cool. They stay inside, its arizona haha.

Thanks for the tips man. How much are o-zone generators.

Also can someone explain everything I need. Business license? registration? insurance? what types work?

I'm not sure if AG offers o3 generators but you can usually find tons of 'em for sale in eBay.

In terms of what you need to get started. In order to be legitimate you technically only need a business license. Since you will have the car in your possession and anything could happen you may want to look into shop keeper's insurance to shield you against any accidental damage or loss.

It's a great idea...I started it as hobby and learning....still learning....but I've been very very busy detailing cars out of my garage making good money. I did a full detail on a 2010 black Audi Q7 today.

Thank you everyone. What are the best ways to get customers? Craigslist?

I've thrown a few ads on Craigslist... never got any bites. I think I'm too spendy for the Craigslist crowd.

#1 way to get new business when starting out: BLOW YOUR CUSTOMER'S MIND WITH EACH DETAIL. Simply do your very best on each job and referrals will come pouring in.

#2 way to get new business when starting out: Online advertising. Build a cool website. Advertise your website on search engines. Optimize your website for first page placement on Google/Yahoo/Bing for your desired search terms.

#3 way to get new business when starting out: Tell EVERYONE that you detail cars and show them your awesome skills. Your friends and family will help spread the word for you for free.
