I look up and there is a guy who just went through the laser touchless car wash with his blue Viper. Ok, no big deal... probably getting the lose stuff off before doing it by hand.
I went back to my vacuuming.

Then I looked back and nearly keeled over from a heart attack! He went to the self serve station and grabbed a handful of the courtesy dry towels, usually the ones equal to P20 Grit sand paper. These are NOT microfiber!

You know, the ones on the cart with the watered down window cleaner. The ones that must be 1000 years old and they keep washing and drying them and putting them back out on that cart.

Truth be told, I've been known to use these for cleaning door jam, trunk jam and under hood jams of my daily driver, but never exterior of the car.

I felt so compelled, I ran over to him and said "what are you doing??" I said, do you know what you are doing to to your clear coat with that towel? I then began to tell him paint correction, and about the plush guzzler and microfiber kits from AG. I told him about AG, Mike Phillips and proper techniques.... Of course he looked at me as if I were deranged and someone who should be locked up. But then he started listening to me.

I thought I saved his car but, as I walked away, he continued to dry the Viper with the P20 Sand paper, err... I mean courtesy dry towels. UGG...

I hate seeing people do stuff themselves..oh the stuff i saw before..makes my heart hurt but what can you do? People will be people.

I saw a guy using a squeegee at a gas station to "wipe down" his car once.

Saw another guy once pressure washing out his trunk
Not sure what cause the trunk to need to be pressured washed out...

i dont ever think it's worth giving unsolicited advice to people. people are going to do what they're going to do and if they care enough they will seek out the knowledge or the people with the knowledge like we all did.

If you really want to talk to someone about this you should approach it as more of a "Hey, nice car!" and then you can transition into your talk about detailing organically...

I bet the Viper wound up having little to no water-spotting
from this Gentleman's drying process.

And speaking of Gentleman:
I also bet that I would have found it to be very difficult to
maintain a Gentlemanly-demeanor, as he evidently did:
when being confronted by your inane histrionics.

Exactly.
If I had been the other guy I would have probably asked if OP was ok .........

Maybe we should have a review on courtesy towels. Who wants to donate their car ?

NEVER gonna happen.

Gee, I should have taken a pic of the Aston-Martin I saw come out of a local MACHINE car wash.
I wanted to slap the guy.

I've never heard of a courtesy towel before
The flex-serve carwashes around my area of the Country have found that a cart laden-down with courtesy towels at the drying-off corral is quite the successful marketing ploy.

I know it's a silly question, but:
Who doesn't appreciate a few "use-for-free towels" to complete that special detail-work that only automated carwashes can provide?

Bob

I would have told you to get away from me unless you wanted your a$$ stomped.

I've seen Bentleys, and Maseraits go through the was I used to work..... I had to take their money, and send them through. We had bristle brushes in there. Bristle.

Then there is the guy who goes through the touchless and pulls out his ONE plush MF from Target (16x16) and dries his car thinking he's babying the finish...road film soup with a side of scratches anyone?

And what's the over/under that towel was dried with fabric softner? Let's start the odds at 9.5:10

I watched someone "detail" his Ferrari in the Walmart parking lot with some type of spray and paper shop towels. As each towel got dirty he would throw it on the ground and the wind would blow it around the parking lot. Not only was he ruining the paint on his car, he was also littering!
