Hi Guys. Just wanted to post a few photos of the car I'll be spending time with on and off for the next few months. This thing is thrashed...1979 Corvette and it has just about every paint defect that a car can have. I got it on this morning, inspected it, talked to the customer about realistic expectations and my hourly rate to be sure we were communicating clearly, did some sap removal, washed and clayed it. Ordered up a bottle of Meg's number 7 show car glaze to feed the paint before I go any further.



















And of course it's got a ton of these strike throughs on just about every sharp edge.



This is going to get interesting for sure.

Been reading these forums for a long time now
You could do that with your eyes closed...

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I have brought back some real doozies but I really do believe this might be the worst one I've had my hands on to date. Kind of reminds me of the red 69 I did a few years back.
 
I have to say... I think that 20 minute limit for editing your posts is a thoroughly stupid and annoying setup....:cry::cry::cry:
 
Obviously you feel this will be profitable for you. You have far too much experience to take on a mess like this were it not going to come out in the + column in the long run. I do not envy you on this one.

Yes you do have your work cut out in bringing this Corvette back to its iconic-beauty.
But, as everyone knows, you have the knowledge and expertise to: Git 'er Done!!

[Your initial assessment, along with the "#7-treatment", is a testament to these facts.]

Are you doing the interior and under-hood?
It'd be interesting to see the condition of these areas.

(Also: AT or 4-speed?; L48, L82, other? Thanks.)

Curious as to what your going to do on the receding hairline of the clear coat

Thanks Bob. I haven't even lifted the hood to look under there. It is a 4 speed but I'm not "Corvette Hip" enough to know what model L82, L48.. What's the difference? Big Block-Small Block? I'll answer that when I find out.

I'll be working on this car in "piecemeal" I'll be doing the exterior first and see where we are at that point. The owner says there's no cap on the budget to have the work done but my concern is having it tie my shop up all the time. Not totally sure what the order of things will be, but I am pretty sure he'll want me to continue on with the interior and under hood as I have time to do so.

The owner of this Vette is very much aware that I have many other responsibilities to handle, so we're taking the position that "Rome wasn't built in a day."

I'm quite sure that the fainting goat clobbered Honda Accord was much less work than what this car will be. :xyxthumbs:

It's actually single stage black paint so hopefully I'll figure out a way to make those blends look better. I see some sanding involved in this project.
 
Dave, You definetly have your hands full, but I have seen you previous work and I know the outcome will be stellar !!

Thanks Wendell, The good thing is that the owner understands that it is always going to be damaged paint, and that there's only so much that can be done without a repaint. He also understands the "3 steps forward and 2 steps back" involved in working on paint that is full of cracks and solvent pop. Buff then clean out the cracks then polish then clean out the cracks etc. and end up using a clear polymer (UPGP) at the finish line.

Yeah right... it is pretty much grey now, however...it will be a brilliant black within a few weeks.
 
You could be done in 2 days easily..
just sand it, tape it and repaint it :lol:
