Something Painful to Watch From a Car "Expert"

Wow!! what a tool he has no idea what he is doing at all. So sad that people will do what he does from the video :(.

This is the same guy who thought he was testing a real Ferrari 250 GTO for his Smoking Tire website when, in fact, he was actually driving a Datsun 240Z with a fiberglass kitcar GTO body on it!

Tool doesn't even begin to describe this guy!

Check out Matt driving a Datsun 240Z he thinks is a real Ferarri. The Datsun owner who duped Matt was the host of Junkyard wars.

Too funny.

He does say he doesn't know what he is doing when it comes to detailing though.

I am 7 minutes in and haven't seen anything horrible yet... what do you guys consider that bad?

Matt is the Guy Fieri of automotives, basically a douchebag that knows a little about their topic but blows it out of proportion claiming that they are "experts"..

Funny I just saw this on Youtube yesterday. Coincidence considering this is a 2009 video.

43 seconds in, the Absorber synthetic chamois. No Sham Wow?
3:20. Looks like he is using a Dobie sponge to remove bugs, BEFORE he washes the car. Wash the car first, THEN see if the bugs don't come off and use something more aggressive. A foam gun would likely soften those bugs so that you wouldn't need that sponge. Plus, if you use that sponge before you wash the area properly, not only can the sponge itself mar, but the flat shape of the sponge will rub any grit on the paint across it like fine sandpaper and be far worse.

"The Smoking Tire shows you how to properly detail your car at home without accidentally ruining your paint in the process."

You do it on purpose INSTEAD of by accident.

Believing a Dastun 240Z is a real Ferrari is even funnier than his detailing. I'm just flat out amazed that Black Magic sponsor this guy and he was a co-hosted on The Car Show along with Wall Street Journal Auto Editor Dan Neil. talk about a mismatch!

Tells you to use soapy water to clay with really
Hosing down the car and let water sit on it in the hot sun
Using a sponge that will mar the crap out of the paint
The crappy fake chamois
Tell you he doesn't like shiny dash but thats what he put on his dash

Watch part 2 even funnier.

That's true... still I don't find that horrible. He does use a 2 wash bucket method... although he starts washing the hood, then goes to the undercarriage and then back up... ;)

I agree it's not the best way to do things, but I have seen far worse than this. Larry from Ammo mentionned that shamies might actually damage the paint. I never use them because of that.

BTW Shamwows are useless. I purchased some for general cleaning and they suck ;)

I was joking when I mentioned Sham Wow. The joke was that he couldn't find a worse product.

To be fair, in part 2, you can see his dash after it dried and it doesn't look shiny. It is more of a sheen.

Washing in the full sun is definitely a problem, although you might be able to do it with filtered water.

2nd part.
2:59 he uses a wheel scrub brush to clean his powder coated wheels. They aren't THAT dirty. The brush seems to have plastic bristles and will definitely scratch. AFTER that he uses a mitt. He should have used a boar's hair brush, or that mitt to do the whole thing, and THEN used a stiffer brush if needed.

3:23
LATER, he talks about how nice the wheels are and how it would be disrespectful to not have them as clean as they possibly could be.

1:22 He uses that stiff blue plastic bristled brush around his emblem. Sure way to scratch the paint.

Ok ok, I will watch it again more carefully ;) LOL

I misunderstood what he said in the beginning. He wasn't saying he did not know about detailing cars, he said he did not know how to fix cars LOL My bad.

I had not watched part 2 though.

I just viewed the first video. Overall, he did an OK job presenting. However, he spent more time talking about himself and his vehicle as opposed to talking about Black Magic products; which sponsored the video. That's funny.

Can't believe I just wasted my time watching that lol, I'm no expert but even I know that he has no clue. That sponge he used did more damage to the paint than anything. I hate that people like this actually have TV shows... I'm so glad I stumbled across this site. It has changed my whole thinking on cleaning my car. I was planning to do my first detailing tomorrow but its forecasted to rain.
