I am curious as t what speed works for those that use the rupes.
I have not had any problems but I was curious?
Thanks

5-6.

But just did the washer mod today. I won't be using it for a bit, so not sure if it will make a diff.

I'm not sure I understand your question...

What specific task are you asking about?

Cutting? Polishing? Spreading Wax?

In any case, it is all dependent on the particular vehicle you are working on. In general, higher speeds are used with more aggressive pads/products for cutting and slower speeds are used with less aggressive pads/products while polishing. Test spots will reveal the best combo of speed/pad/product for each scenario.

With the Bigfoot 15 and 21 I use a slower speed to spread my product out over the area I'm going to work and then bump up to the 6 - full speed ahead.

With the Duetto and Mini 12's pretty much the same thing...

:)

Does the washer mod make much of a difference? It was the only "detailing" I could do today in the snow. I found out there is 2 types of 5/16" washers that are 2 different sizes: USS & SAE.

Who knew?

I pretty much use it at speed 6 for compounding, and anywhere from 4-5 for polishing. I love me my Rupes!

Yes it does help. Just grind down the sides on the 5/16" washer to fit. It doesn't have to be perfect..it's the thickness that matters.

Don't use a standard size. Get a metric 8mm washer, it's a perfect fit. Kevin Brown told me this personally and I believe it comes with the rupes polishers he sells.

On my Rupes 15, speed 5 and up to 6 are essentially the same speed. I do use the washer tweak.

I got my info for from this video, where he is "modding" the 5/16" washer:

I guess there is the Rupes' Washer Mod (8 mm)

and the Rupes' Washer WASHER Mod (5/16")

I already did it. BP seems to spin pretty true, also no drag now. Looking back, I probably should have just went with the 8mm washer as I filed it by hand and it didn't come out quite perfect.

Thanks for the input!
We have decided to stay with the rupes system, as I remember someone recommending the synergy of the system approach, remember that Mike from 2005?

Any idea wheer I can find a 8mm metric washer? Home Depot or Lowes?

...the Rupes' Washer WASHER Mod...

Yep, and to make an analogy which I think is pretty comparable, without the washer (which just functions as a spacer to eliminate the designed-in drag on the backing plate) it's like driving your car with the emergency brake slightly engaged. With the washer it's like driving with the emergency brake off.
(Assuming a car with a mechanical emergency brake)

The amount of drag without the washer is not all that much (I assume it's about the same on the 21 and the 15), so it might be the case that the washer/spacer only really matters when the pad rotation was on the verge of stopping without the washer, and the added spacer gives more margin as far as allowing the pad to continue to rotate for a bit more applied pressure or friction from panel contours.

Are you using something that measures orbital speed, or are you just going by a lack of audible difference? I imagine it's pretty hard to see the difference between say 4800 opm and 4200 opm especially with such a smooth-running motor.

Think Nick's going to post something cool pretty quick Rupes related...

Just to follow up...

And you can see these pads in action and the final results from the below thread and live broadcast video. I'm pretty sure the first video on the net showing the new Rupes Duetto and Mini 12 polishers in action plus the MF pads as we shot this the week after SEMA when all these things were introduced.
