Stacking Sealants and coatings

Yes sir, I just learned of this product and apparently its new, just released a few months ago. I guess im jumping ship from opticoat to cquartz now.

It used to be that either one was a wash, opticoat was more durable but cquartz had a bit more gloss.

But now, Im definately giving cquartz a try, This finishing polish\sealant called essence adds tremendous gloss from the threads ive just searched and it makes for perfect panels because it has fillers.

It saves me from using ipa which not only takes time, but reintroduces scratches. PLUS it fills in imperfections. This sounds like the perfect product on paper.

I think its sealant then coating that makes the most sense, since you need the sealantwax to have bare contact on the paint to hide all of those nagging defects, Then you add a coating on top to encapsulate the sealant.

The glass coating should be the one exposed to the elements due its hydrophobicness and durability. Though it's ability to bond with a sealant is my only question.

Coating first, to clean bare paint. If you put it on top of the sealant you're wasting your money on the coating.

But then the sealantwax wont hide the defects right? Which is what I am looking for.

I saw this glass coating its japanese, used by esoteric detail. I wont mention the name since we aren't allowed to mention things not sold by auto geek.

Anyways, they sell an artificial clear coat which on paper sounds alot like a sealant. How it bonds with the clear coat and hides defects for upto a yr. Ontop of this artificial clear coat is there glass coating.

It makes the car look immaculate, especially if paint was corected prior.

Just curious, does Esoteric sponsor a great detailing forum like this?

Just ordered it. I guess Ill have to wait until next week to try it out.

I would really like to hear what Mike Phillips would have to say on this issue.

The Articles I have read on AGO about Applying Coatings have been very simple.

1. Wash, Clean, Polish, and Prepare Paint the best you possibly can.
2. Then apply Coating
3. Maintain with proper car care

I don't understand why all the added confusion about putting a wax or sealant underneath the coating, or putting a wax or sealant on top of a coating.

It seems by a lot of review pictures that most of these coatings, with a properly prepared paint, add plenty enough beauty and protection that there is just not really a need to additionally add any other wax or sealant into the mix.

And just another tidbit. Quickcln, you had mentioned bringing Nu-finish into the mix. I truly respect you're thoughts in wanting to give your vehicle the BEST protection and Appearance possible. And I think that all of us here, including myself, share this desire with you.

I do want to mention that My brother, Uncle, and Cousin all use NF and swear by it. About 20 years ago that's all I used. But I think that if you go the "Coating" route you would have no need for the NF, because it sounds like a lot of these Coatings will last longer and provide far much better Beauty than the NF can. Also I have come to see that AGO offers just SO many Paint Sealants that Offer more and above what NF can and has offered.

As you read a lot of reviews on the different products here at AGO I think you might find yourself reaching for the NF less and less. I'm not saying it is a bad product or that it doesn't work at all. Because it does work. There is just so many more products out there now, especially on AG, that offer so much more.

Sealant first and then coating is a no no way to go. If you laying sealant first, it would be sealant that bond to the paint, and once sealant cure, they will have ability to reject another chemical that try to bonding to paint (that is the reason that we use sealant to protect a car). And now you want to put a coating which is a chemical, on top of sealant and hoping that your coating will bond? Nope, coating chemical would be rejected and just one wash all your money for that coating would be a waste.

Also, if you go for the route of carpro Essence then CQuartz, please bare in mind that the maximum is not going to last more than a year, and it most case 6-8 months for daily drive.

If you want to hide the imperfection the most you can coat and then Glaze or sealant. It could help you hiding minor swirl as well. Please also note that sealant or glaze will be remove everytime you wash the car by coating chemical resistant property.

Your best plan of attack is to filly correct the car, then coat it. I had a couple asshats scrape both of my rear doors on my Focus. I taped off my work area, then buffed/polished the doors. After i reapplied coating.

Thanks for all the responses.

The reason why this idea pops into my mind is because there are already 3 products that do something similar:

1. kamikaze clear coat
2. wolf gangs glaze and shine
3. Carpro essence

I just ordered carpro essence, and cquartz and am giving this a try since its the cheapest combination of products. Although essence is so new that no reports on durability are out yet, carpro claims that the durability is the same as cquartz on bare paint.

If it comes out as glossy as Ive seen in some of the other threads ill be happy

Use Carpro essence for prep the paint. Polish some defects, fill then, and prep the surface to coat with ceramic coating .

Kind of a really late update on this. But Ive been busy. Anyways I recently finially polished my car. I didn't do a massively good job. It was sort of a 1 step polish then cquartz. I did not end up using carpro essence. I hate it. It is so powdery and becomes dusts almost immediate and embeds itself into the clear. Terrible product. Instead I went straight for meguairs ultimate compound after the first panel. And everything worked without a hitch. SO no, I am not stacking cquartz on top of essence. I wasted $$ on essence and was so fed up with the wasted time I threw the bottle in the trash. I've never had a good experience with carpro products. I like opticoat over cquartz and any of meguiars products over essence.

The only product from carp pro I like is the foam shampoo, and that mostly because of the smell.

essence is a terrible product on its own. It doesn't correct at all. and it creates a bunch of dust that gets stuck in your clear coat. I can't believe that they sell this crap. its a joke.

how so? I am using car pro essence EXACTLY as it is instructed on their site: Paint correct + Essence polish + cquartz. And it doesn't work at all. I think that is valuable information. You aren't supposed to ipa essence.

I've used Essence a half dozen times and literally have never experienced any of the things you are claiming.
