Stanley vs Crescent Socket Set?

This is also kind of dissuading me from any Craftsman tools... ever.
Too bad.

Lots of Craftsman love - I think you've swayed me!
Anybody happen to know the tooth count on those Craftsman ratchets?
So this was, basically, a BS posting?

OK...I see how it's going to be.
So:
Upon further review of your OP...
I'll interpret what you stated therein as:

-You are not a professional mechanic; and:
-You are not a "Tim Taylor" type tool lover.
-Most suggestions for any comprehensive tool sets, other than what you listed, are found to not be favorable.

Accordingly:
I'm bowing out of this thread.

Huh. Well, alright.

As several have said, in so many words, most of the common brands are made by only a couple of mfg's. If you're not a regular stop for a tool truck, I'd suggest getting something you can replace easily, like from a Big Box store. Just about all the old tool names are not the primary owner of their name anymore.

Just one more comment on sockets. I suggest you really look at the impact sockets rather than chrome sockets. Many are now much slimmer (esp. in higher quality brands) than they used to be (true not as slim as chrome) and it will save you $$$ by buying only 1 type of socket. When you need a slim socket by the chrome one individually. Course, they don't look as pretty in your box. :)

So many choices. 15 years ago a friend talked me in to a set of flank drive sockets. I have never stripped a nut or bolt yet with them. Of course they might have something better out now

I've got both Stanley, Crescent and Blue Point socket sets, the 1/2" Stanley set I've had for over 10 years and it's still going strong, I've removed engines, wheels, gearboxes, cylinder heads and only ever got a hairline crack the 14mm socket in that time. The Crescent set is also good although it hasn't seen the abuse the Stanley has. The only thing I don't like about the Crescent set is the switch on the ratchet is reverse to just about every other brand of socket wrenches I have used. I'd go with the Stanley set for the price.

Craftsman is China made now at USA prices...except for the 84 tooth professional rachets. If you're not going to go with the USA stuff like Snap on, SK, Mac, etc I'd just go with Harbor Freight. Just as good as quality as anything else made off shore. Taiwan stuff is better than China stuff IMO.
