Im on a tight budget but need a steam cleaner for carpets and whatever else. What does everyone use?

Yea the vx5000 is a great one, unless your on a "tight budget". Really all the ones you find a Fred Meyer or Walgreens are close to the same. I would read the online reviews of those and pick from there.

New guy question - Is a steamer better than an car cleaner air gun? I realize you need an air compressor w/ the gun but it seems to me steamer would be a little more versatile.

Thx

Mark

IMO a steamer is indispensable. If your budget is under $100, Shark makes one that will do seats, windows and carpet. It is slow but it works. If your budget goes up to $800, the VX5000 is a very good machine. It will do everything you would want including engine bay but excluding exterior paint. It has the power and has hot water injection. It is a closed unit (not continuous fill) but will last for a good while on a full tank. Heat up is relatively slow like 15 min or more with cold water.

I have and have used both of these machines. I recently bought the Dupray but Dupray and limited budget probably don't belong in the same discussion. It it pricy but a great machine.

The steamer and the Tornador air cleaner gun are two entirely different machines. They do overlap in that the Tornador can be used to clean most of the interior and even door jams. It does not do especially well on really hard jobs like chewing gum in carpet or Junk dried in console (see my thread of try this without a steamer). I like the Tornador better on headliners because you don't run the risk of melting the glue holding some headliners in. I use both machines every detail. If I had to give up one, it would be the Tornador. I can't detail without steam. Hope this helps.

Alot of folks use the Bissell Little Green Machine for carpets and upholstry. I have the McCulloch that you posted but not sure if that will really help with getting carpets clean. It may be good for spot treatments but you may want to look into this:

Little Green® Proheat® Deep Reach? Spot Cleaner

I just purchased one 2 weeks ago and would recommend the proheat version. It clearned the carpets well and appreciated the size and quatity of attachements.. The spayer delivers a good amount of solution and the suction was adequate to extract most of the fuild from the carpet.

Big...was it difficult to maneuver the attachments in the vehicle?

Alex,
The Bissell comes with two attachments. One slightly larger than my fist and one alittle smaller. Both allowed me to clean the carpet mats, seats and floorboards in both vertical and horizontal pattern with room to spare. The only issue I saw was reaching the areas between the seat and the console in the middle. It's a tigh space that most tools can't reach other than some solution, small brush and a towel to blot. Good luck.
