I've tried that mate, no joy :/
It has to sit on the goo for a bit and usually takes several application/wipe offs to break down really old goo. A plastic razor blade also helps the process without marring your paint. Goo gone or 3M adhesive remover or the 3M citrus cleaner might work. I have all of them at my disposal but rarely had to use anything but WD-40.
