Mike / Gentlemen:

I want to detail my 2011 Black Maserati GT S coupe with 5,000 miles. The car is in excellent condition, garage kept at home and at the office and driven 6,000 miles each year.

If I put my nose about an inch or two from the paint or stare at it in direct sunlight I notice some swirls. They appear to be fine swirls? I am not sure how to tell the difference? They say these cars have medium paint?

I used a porter cable 7424, Meguairs #9, a polish, and Zaino over the years on my white coupe with great results. However, I am now dealing with a black car and I am trying to take my detailing and results to another level. This is what I am thinking about using:

Step 1 - XMT Swirl Remover #2, apply with Orange Light cutting pad
Step 2 - XMT Swirl Remover #1, apply with White polishing pad
Step 3 - XMT Finishing Glaze, apply with finishing foam or grey pad

Final - Follow up with Souveran Paste wax.

As an amateur, here are my questions

Do I need XMT Swirl Remover #3? Will that be too aggressive? I do NOT want to damage the paint ? Then is it a 4 step process?

Do I have to use #2, then #1 then the glaze for the best results? ( Is it always a three step process no matter which product? )

Are there better / easier products then Pinnacle XMT for the porter cable?

I am also considering the Wolfgang Twins?

OR the Menzerna Products? ( Which ones do I want? )

Any and all suggestions, advice and or comments are appreciated!!Feed back please

Thanks. CM

Something like this,

Regardless of how deep or shallow the swirls are you want to take the least aggressive approach to removing swirls but chances are very good at a minimum you'll need a medium cut polish. Also you'll need either some foam cutting and/or polishing pads to remove the swirls.

The #9 is a very light cutting polish and can leave micro-marring when used with a DA Polisher on some paints. Of course you wouldn't see any micro-marring on white paint.

Definitely go with either the Wolfgang Twins or Menzerna polishes.

If you have a first generation Porter Cable, that is you don't have the XP model that came out within the last 3 years then also get 5.5" flat foam pads from Lake Country as ALL PC style tools have an easier time rotating these size pads.

I have a ton of articles on buffing out paint using a DA Polisher. My first how-to book focuses on the PC style DA Polisher and I have a number of DVD's on the topic plus videos on YouTube.

Here's a link to the Wolfgang Twins you want to get,

The Wolfgang Twins

Occasionally I get a Private Message asking what the Wolfgang Twins are so this is a simple thread that shows the products with link to their pages on the Autogeek.net store.

In simple terms...

The Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover is medium strength swirl mark remover that will tackle a majority of the cars that most people reading this will ever tackle.

The Wolfgang Finishing Glaze is a very light finishing polish that will refine the results created by the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover and leave a clear, haze-free finish.

For most projects you would,

Step 1 - Wash and dry car

Step 2 - Inspect paint for above surface bonded contaminants
If discovered, use detailing clay to remove the contaminants, see this article.

Step 3 - Remover Swirls
At this step you would use the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover

Step 4 - Polish to a high gloss
At this step you would use the Finishing Glaze

Step 5 - Seal and protect paint
At this step you would apply your LSP or Last Step Product, this could be a wax or a paint sealant. A popular choice that keeps you in the Wolfgang family would be to follow the Finishing Glaze with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0

Then if you want you can top the WDGPS with Wolfgang Fuzion.
This car had the above process used over the for a swirl free, show car finish.

Here's a link to an article I wrote on Menzerna polishes with their new names and links to them on the AG Store. Go with the SI 1500 and the SF 4000 and you're guaranteed success.

Menzerna - New Names and Product Numbers

Menzerna has introduced all new labels and product names for identifying their products. I know it's easy to stick with what you know and change can be hard but the new product names and identifying numbers are here to stay so might as well make the switch when talking and typing about them..

Mike thanks!

Sorry for the crazy post, I just bought the car with 5,000 miles on it, to give you an idea of how the paint condition may be? I only drive 6,000 miles each year. CM

No worries. Thanks for the clarification. !! :xyxthumbs:

Bought everything from AG last night! Thanks.

Love this site! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Last night I purchased from AG:

6 5.5 inch flat LC Pads, 2 orange, 2 white and 2 blue
Wolfgang Twins
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint sealant.

I just recently bought Pinnacle Souveran Paste wax that I was going to use to top off the Deep Gloss Sealant. Is that a good or bad idea?

Lastly, I read the Deep Gloss Sealant has to cure for 12 hours? Can I drive the car in dry conditions after I put it on, or must it remain in the garage for 12 more hours?

Thanks. CM

You can top with a nuba but I would allow it to cure.

You can drive it as soon as you really want.

As time progresses, the risk of harm liquid supposedly does diminishes dramatically.
