I'm getting these black spots on the inside of my van that look like mold, and I am 99% sure it's from the stored gasoline I use. Because whenever I clean the inside of a gas door just about everyone has this same problem. I keep a generator and gas pressure washer inside my van.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Or is this just something I'm going to have to live with?

I believe you are referring to Mildew, not Mold. And yes, with today's ethanol rich gasoline it very well could be mildew due to the moisture. Don't quote me on this, let's see what others have for answers.

You're right. The dirt on the inside of the gas door does resemble mildew.

Mold and mildew grow from warmth and moisture. Do you keep wet stuff in the van or have leaks?

So I should start buying ethanol free gas then and the problem will go away?

It's a pretty common problems in boats: in fuel lockers, engine compartments, under boat covers. I think it's some combination of gas and water vapor.

If your getting mold under your fuel door it could be a sign that you evap canister is getting clogged and/or you need a new gas cap. I'd probably try replace the latter, but I wouldn't replace the evap canister just for that.

EVAP System problems will usually throw a check engine light within a few hundred miles at most.
