Stupid question?

Reminds me of how I did it!

Spring of 1998 I picked up a cheap wen rotary polisher, and some megs pads/chemicals from the local paint shop, and started buffing my 1993 gmc Safari.... those were the days. No issues either. A light touch and some common sense goes a long way. You have so much more info at your disposal these days. Enjoy!
 
A rotary can be your best friend, or your worst nightmare.
Practice on an old bonnet, several times.

A D.A can do almost anything you need done using good products, pads, etc.
 
I'd like to say a big thank you for everyone sharing their knowledge and experience. lots of great tips and thank you mike for showing me those guides for taping. how possible is it that you can get the desired finish when finishing with a rotary?
