Stupid things your "Detailer" has said (that made you get into detailing your own car)

I had a rocker panel repainted on my old silver BMW due to a curb accident at Dunkin Doughnuts. I went to a BMW body shop to get it re-sprayed. The car was silver, their painting looked grey. The body shop manager told me; "give it a month - see how it matches then". Like some how the color was going to change from grey to silver in a month. Never had them fix it, as I traded the car in that way.

I've heard this line before. What a load of crap

Had a car detailed by a local shop several years ago. It looked GREAT when I picked it up. Less than a week later, hologram city. Took it back, got "I have no clue why that happened, but we'll take care of it." It looked GREAT when I picked it up. Less than a week later......

I vowed NO ONE will touch my car's paint but me. That was 10 years ago, I've been lurking (and learning) on these (and other) detailing forums for a long time. My paint may not be 100% blemish free, but it's pretty darn good for daily drivers, and outshines most of the vehicles around here.

(BTW, hello Autogeek!)

Grandpa uses gasoline to get the tar off and he coats the whole bottom half of the car.

He never uses soap

His car is a little dirty so he goes out there with a bucket of water and sponge and just "Wipes it down"

The people that think the touchless car wash will make your car look great.

My sister had a detail shop do her car cuz they only wanted 40 dollars while I wanted 100 dollars. The guy said his wax will not fade off after a year of drive through car washes and it can hold up to 2 years." You all know how bad I wanted to say, yeh that doesn't exist, he saw sucker written on your head but he prolly actually thought it was true LoL stupid detailer.

Turns out it ended up costing her 100 dollars anyway cuz he sucked them in and pulled some tricks to get more money out of them hahahaha stupid sister.

Yup, tons of mechanics use gasoline to clean parts too. Mostly stubborn old people who can keep up with times... Until they set the shop on fire.

After I had back surgery I could not do my own detail work for almost a year.
So I took my car to a local "big time" detail shop.
I told the manager that I always did my own work and knew exactly what a properly corrected car should look like. I also told him that I was going to give a small area on the roof a quick wipe with "pre cleaner" to see if the swirl were really removed or just covered up with a glaze. If the swirls were still there you don't get paid. Even wrote that on the work order.
His face sure "dropped" when I got out my spray botthe of isopropyl alchohol and a MF towel.
You guessed it, no correction had been done at all. And I drove off without paying him a cent.
For the rest of the year I just went to the local "tunnel of shame" to get the dirt off and after I was recovered I spent a week on it. Sure made me feel recovered to see my car back to perfect again.

A "detailer" went up to me after I washed and waxed my car and said..

If you let me wax it it's gonna look sooo much better and sooo much shinier, not like that! Then got out a Turtle Wax compound can.

I dunno what shocked me more, seeing the TW can or that he just knocked off my finish. :bolt:

HAHAHAHAHA
Thats great!!!
How come people like that always think they know more then someone they know nothing about.
I guy painting a house with some other guys came up to me the other day and handed me some cards and actually said,"yeah we real cheap, we beat any ones prices". I said "yeah, cheap huh?" "yeah, real cheap"
HA his "crew" was blasting loud music, and painting over cracking and peeling paint.
Yeah....real cheap for a reason.
Same mentality!

That's just to get you to go away, and they hope after a month you won't feel like coming back or you will have forgotten about it or gotten used to it.

Went into Advance Auto to pick up some Griots car wash. Told the guy at the counter this stuff was pretty good. He said he refuses to use that stuff because it is worthless. Said he had a special soap that was made by some guy who used to work for Blue Coral. He proceeded to extoll the virtues of his soap that had 'Rain-X technologies' in it. He said you should see how it beads. I just walked away shaking my head and said 'as long as you enjoy using it, I guess that is all that matters'.
