Hey, remember I mentioned something about a mythical figure from way back on MOL? I found him. This guy.

And sure enough, here he was asking some oddball question because he was like that, always.

Do you remember him?

Of course I remember TOGWT. He was an experimental AI.

Ask Bill D about him, they banned him at Autopia when Bill was a moderator there.

PS TOGWT stands for "The Old Grey Whistle Test" which was some sort of British TV show, kind of an American Idol kind of thing, or America's Funniest Home Videos, or something. EDIT: Stupid Human Tricks?

Wait, you’re kidding, right? You gotta be kidding…

I was literally just laughing in my head remembering some of the stuff he would post about like “don’t ever make the mistake of challenging that man to a debate about detailing because he will take you to school” my next thought was “he was like the equivalent of AI or something”… And now you say this??

And yes, I had heard what his name stood for, 1st time I’ve remembered about it in many years.

TOGWT claimed (claims?) to have all kinds of degrees and pedigrees, that he's a chemist--yet he never seemed to post anything in his own voice, it was always cut and pasted from somewhere else, with no reference to the source (Bill D will comment more on this). TOGWT seems to have even bamboozled TRC, they did a podcast tribute to him 6 years ago.

Jon Miller, AKA TOGWT was an interesting guy. No doubt he had a passion for advanced detailing but his plagiarism of information became a concern to the staff of Autopia. I believe he was asked to stop repeatedly but he continued so David B asked me to ban him

It was a shame. I liked the guy. He lived not super far from me and he asked me to proof a book he was writing. I think I have a hard copy I printed out somewhere

The fact he is still being mentioned shows he left a lasting impression

So was the book actually in his own voice, or just a collection of stuff he snipped from the internet?

The book was mostly cut and paste as far as I could tell. This guy had to be expelled from school if he tried that there

The content of those two links seem like him actually talking in his own voice. I remember the content of the manuscript he sent me to be cut and paste info.

If you looked at some of the blog posts--I looked at one about leather care--that could all be cut-and-paste

I think the blog links are over on the right side of those bio pages

I’ll take some time to review them. Troubling how much stuff he cut and pasted, huh?

I’ll never forget that guy. Before lurking for years on this forum I lurked on MOL for even more years… There was plenty of good reading to keep me interested, but that guys posts were on a whole nother level. I’d bet even 20yrs later now that some of the stuff he posted about would still go over my head.

I would read some of his posts and think to myself “who the heck is this guy, and how the hell does he even know about all this stuff”? Lol.

The word mythical gets thrown around alot but that guy was about as close as it gets as far as I’m concerned. Even his avatar pic was sort of creepy. Lol.

Setec Astronomy may be a Legend, but that guy was a lowercase detailing god.lol.

I’m glad you guys have this interesting info to tell, it couldn’t have been left in better hands. Cheers.
