So I know the major ways to get swirls (car washes, improper cleaning, etc.) but I wanted to check on one that I heard from somewhere (no idea, we're talking 20 years ago). That is that just driving can cause fine swirls/scratches. I assume the idea is from airflow over the car and maybe dirt in the air causing fine scratches down the car.

Is this completely bogus? I remember when I had a dark green car in the early 2000's it had no real paint care for about 60K miles of which most was freeway driving but I also would go through soft cloth auto washes with it. It had the marks that I assumed were mostly the wind related ones I'd been told about years before, but now I'm wondering if that is complete bull and as I now suspect the marks were purely the "soft cloth" washes.

Swirls are caused by inproper washing

Holigrams are caused by using a rotary buffer, then not finishing it out

The wind does not cause swirls IMO

I hope Mike doesn't mind me stepping into his forum, but those "soft cloths" were filled with hard dirt from everybody else's car. It's certainly possible that "wind-driven" particles can cause some damage, but in this case, I'd point to the car wash.

Are you driving in a tornado? Then I could see some swirls being wind related but at that point I think its the least of your worries.

But really, we all know wind plus sand is a great way to remove paint(sand blasting) but I think all your swirls are from the wash as Setec said.
