Hello, long time lurker here. Just decided to join and see what its all about. I have a 2013 Camaro (White/Blue Stripes), and my pride and joy 2008 Silverado (black), with 6 inches of lift and a whole lot of other goodies. I bought the truck bone stock, and have slowly started to build it over the last few years.
My question today is about detailing it, I have just started an interest in detailing. My Silverado is black, and it has a ton of deep swirl marks. I have tried many products to try and take it out (M. Ultimate compound, Turtle wax speed compound, Turtle wax polish, Turtle wax Hard shell wax, and a few others.) and nothing seems to want to remove them. In the direct sunlight you can see massive amounts of swirl marks. After using the Ultimate compound on a buffer it seemed to take out a little of the marks but not really enough to be noticeable. I've read that Ultimate compound is one of the harshest compounds out there. Even that doesn't want to remove these swirl marks. I applied some Turtle wax hard shell wax and that seemed to make the paint pop but there was still swirl marks noticeable.

I also have a Silverado (2014 white) and have had no problems removing defects using the products you mentioned.

Where you using UC by hand or machine?

Machine is a Snap-On DA variable speed. Pads I've tried, Microfiber and a m105, speed was a slower speed maybe 3-4 on a 1-10 scale. Prep before was a good wash and dry, then I used a clay bar over the whole truck, after the clay bar the surface of the paint was super smooth and looked a ton better but the paint still looked dull and not "bright" black. Then I moved to the ultimate compound, polish, and hard shell wax. Polish and wax I did by hand. Sorry forgot to add I am relatively new to detailing/machine polishing.

So that was an air-powered DA? What brand of microfiber pad? Did you blow out the residue periodically?

Yes sir, air powered, microfiber pad was just the standard one that comes with it. I would assume that it is decent quality. I tried to blow it out with the air nozzle often, I had a few pads so I just swapped them out. Even with a new pad it didn't seem to "cut" through the marks, possibly I'm making new ones?

May want to look into cutting pads..not sure MF will cut the clear enough....others here will know better

Also...are the swirls there after compounding..or are you looking after compounding and washing...

If you havent researched how to wash a car to prevent swirling that will be helpful...also not sure if you read about avoiding any type of car wash...hand wash only...else swirls will reappear very quickly

I have done some reading on how to wash to prevent them. I kinda took some tips from everyone's process. Now I use the two bucket method, pressure wash and stuff off then use a good car soap and a good clean microfiber wash mit, or if it's super dirty I'll bring out the foam gun. And dry it buy taking it for a quick spin after hitting it with a leaf blower. I've masked off some 1x1 sections to try some different products. It seems that using the ultimate compound with a "cutting cloth" by hand. Then the polish and a coat of wax of it seems to really make it a a ton better. Doing it in one foot sections seems to do much better
