I know what both look like, but are there any differences between the two, I mean like does on come out easier than the other, also when swirl marks get deep to get out with a pc is it considered a scratch?

I know what your saying, and i often thought the same thought,

On my car the swirls looked just like spiderwebbing. very fine....
where the swirls were to me harder to remove, they looked like circular heavier scratches to me. i got then out just fine:)

My problem was micro -maring.......very ugly straight lines in the clear coat
it took some work, but i got 80% of them out

im a happy camper........:p

they are often used interchangably .... swirls, spiderwebbing, marring and the like. Basically they are scratches in the paint or clearcoat that are noticable since their jagged edges catch light.

My research/experience as found:
"Webbing" is more the fine scratches you always see that are a result of everyday wear.
"Swirls" a.k.a "Marrying" are the results you often see after polishing with an abrasive. Or improper polishing. Also can be caused by dirt/debris rubbing against the surface with hand applications.

In general how much of the swirls in paint are caused from just everyday driving or just from the elements, I've been struggling with the concept of swirls and i'm about to loose my mind, I polish my car, get 90% of the swirls out, I wash with the utmost care, using all the products and techniques you guyz use and I'm very careful to keep them off, not touching the paint, carefully use a qd and a good mf, keep all my mf clean, and so on and so on, but it always seem like sooner or later they come back, don't get me wrong my car looks better than most of the cars out there. And I've also almost scared myself out of claying, I did one car once and it swirled or mared the paint, maybe it was dirty clay, but it freaked me out, should clay do this, I know it probably will if its dirty, but in general with a clean peice of clay with a good lubricant can clay scratc . Maybe I'm just to particular or ocd, I don't know, I need some help. Once you guyz polish your cars, how long till ya have to do it again and do you guyz get everything out, is it even possible. Sorry this thread so long and full of questions, Bear with me I'm just really upset and confused and freaked out. Thanks so much guyz.

Swirls

Excessive Detail,

I bought my first dark car in 6 years, but only after I learned how to wash and remove swirls correctly. This was a good question that I was about to ask at some point.

DITTO.........GREAT QUESTION......but i don't have an answer either......

MYSTERY:confused:

I think the definitions are subjective and a lot of people interchange the 2. I pretty much define spiderwebbing as fine scratches primarily from poor washing technique or from improper wax removal.

I use swirls to mean improper use of a rotary buffer and deeper than spiderwebbing.

Like I said, it's up to the detailer to define the look.

totoland mach

Is there any good literature or videos available on proper swirl removal and paint maintence and can anyone put together a list of car manufacturers and their paint on a scale of easiest to work with to worst, or something like that.
