States that charge sales tax on services ( labor ) and or merchendise, usually require you to pay your sales tax on a quaterly basis.

Sales tax varies from state to county to city to town so you need to do some homework.

The SBA can help you with all this information and the best part its a free service, your hard earned taxes pay for this.

I just hope I have helped you a little

did you have to register anywhere as a sole proprietor? im on hold right now with the illinois secretary of state...i hate all this tax stuff i just want to detail some cars already:P

All you have to do in illinois is go to your county clerk pay $5 to file a DBA and list your request in a local paper.....total cost was 55 dollars. As a sole propertior your federal tax id will be your social security #

As a side note you do not have to register anything with the county to detail someones car for money, you do have to claim the income to the IRS though when you file your taxes

And no you are not selling anything, so you do not charge a sales tax

theres another thing im not really clear about, i have a business license that i got from my city hall, am i LLC?

No a business lisc gives you permission to conduct business in a perticular city.....a LLC is how your business is legally estabilished

And are you sure you need a business lisc for your city?? You are mobile detailer, unlike an established fixed location business which does require business liscenses

thank you for all your help. one more question, do i have to register with the illinois department of revenue?

i talked to a CPA and they said no, but online it says that anyone doing business in illinois or with illinois residents needs to register their business with the illinois department of revenue.

As a sole propertior no because any income you earn is claimed on your 1040 at the end of the year. If you have employees then yes because you have to pay taxes on them.
