I would wet sand with 2000 grit until etching is removed. Try sanding and then wiping with paper shop towel to see progress. Your goal is to remove 80% of the defect. Then hand compound with microfiber pad. If still visible sand a little more and then re-compoud. I use Meguiar's Ultimate Compound for spot corrections.
