I always use one in the rinse but I don't usually use one in the wash bucket. Putting one in the wash bucket blocks off a gallon of wash solution which means I'd have to add another gallon. This would end up being less cost effective because it uses up more shampoo for each wash. I understand why people use the extra grit guards but I use a grout sponge which just by squeezing it out releases most of the dirt. So after I squeeze the dirt out, then rub it against the grit guard in the rinse bucket, it's clean.
