The "What do you do for a living?" question

I am an Assistant Accounting Manager for a grain company. It is probably the worst place to work for someone that likes clean cars. Within 5 minutes of parking at work the car is lightly dusted on a good day. You don't even want to know about bad days.

I wash my car constantly, but hope to start detailing on the side this spring.

@OP:
I didn't catch what your response would be in this "social scenario"...Care to share?

Myself?
I've neither been, or ever will be: A full or part time Pro Detailer...
[but I used to play one on TV :D]

Retired now from engaging in most commercial interests.

Bob

I've never been a part timer (only full time or not at all) though may be facing the situation soon. That's what got me curious! My thoughts were already aligned like jpegs'--keep both on hand and on mind and play whichever card seems most advantageous. Although I think detailing will win 80% of the time.

Should be a lot more profitable than detailing!

I used to own a pharmacy distribution route and would always reply: "I'm a drug runner."

When I was in the 3rd grade they had us going around the room telling everyone what our parents did for a living as some ice breaker thing. One little girl's dad was a police officer with the local PD and her mom was a Pharmacist and owned the local Pharmacy. So, naturally, her response was "My Daddy is a Cop and my Mommy sells drugs!"

P.S., this thread is proof that people respond based on the title and not the content of the O.P. :P The OP was asking if people network themselves as a 'detailer', or by their full time job. But everyone is responding with their full time job! Hehe.

OP- I don't detail for anyone but myself- but I'd have to say that would depend on the situation! If it's just some random stranger on the street who could be a prospective client, might not be a bad idea to tell them you're a detailer! Not that I would lie to anyone, BUT, I wouldn't make it a habit of volunteering that you detail 'on the side', as that has a bit of a connotation of someone who really isn't top notch. If I were a detailer, I would just tell any prospective clients that I am a detailer- period!

Engineer by day (work on bulldozers for a world leader in construction and mining equipment - my location should give that away :))... Detailer by night/weekends.

I typically respond to the OP's question as "I am an engineer ____"... but most everyone at work knows of my detailing business as well. If I am meeting a stranger, and conversation leads to cars, I will then chime in with my knowledge of detailing.

Not a Pro Detailer or part-timer, just an enthusiast. I am a Portfolio Manager for a major financial firm. I hear that jpegs uses his personal cars as loaners when he is detailing your car.....line wraps around the corner immediately to detail Yugos and 82 Corollas

I'm a designer for a HVAC company. I get to play with SolidWorks all day. I tell my kids it's like playing with legos on the computer.

I "clean cars" as a hobby. My hobby is turning into official detailing in the spring. Christmas is always good to the kids, but this year it's going to be good to me too. :)

I detail full time, on the side and as a hobby.
I hate telling people I'm a detailer though, because I think people picture me working at a car wash making $8/hour

I am an IT systems administrator (unix, network, storage). Detailing is my part time business.

Those of you that are detailing part time with a full time job; have you ever thought of taking detailing full time? What is holding you back?

Just curious...good topic! :)

I play fireman. Part Time detailer

I'm in Sales, a Wholesale Acocunt Manager for small Iowa Based Telecommunications company. I also "work" for the Iowa Wild Professional Hockey team as an Off-Ice Official. I also dabble with some photography.

I'm the inventory manager for a major pharmaceutical wholesaler. I oversee approximately $600 million dollars in drug inventory. Detail on the side.

I'm a nerd, I selectively sell myself to certain clients. I don't want your 92 Lumina, I want your Porsche.

I'm currently a full time detailer. I'm also a part time mechanic, house flipper, and paint and body Guy. I like odd jobs.

If I could be more selective I'd flip houses exclusively, and detail on the side.

My jobs and clients do most of my advertising, which keeps me busy. My wife has also sent a lot of work my way through her job in the Air Force.

Im not a bit ashamed of what I do, as I get paid very well for it.

Independent Sales Rep. I sell Durable Medical Equipment to College Athletic Trainers across the country. I'm also a partner in a business selling educational software to K-12. And in the summer I'm the MC/DJ at a restaurant/marina on Lake Erie. "Tommy Gee's Beach Party" So I get paid to party on the weekends!

I am a full time student by day (and night) In the spring and summer I detail, as well as maintain my car throughout the year. I worked part-time for an airline-detailing company for awhile, but I prefer working on cars (less surface area + greater attention to detail)... Plus I prefer to use AGO approved methods of detailing haha.

Full time high school student by day and work several odd jobs during the evenings and weekends to fund my detailing addiction!
