Thief rips off Subaru owner

I bet that car will be stripped down before he is able to get it back.

It's a sad deal and I feel sorry for the guy. That's why I would never do a trade. FE guy should have checked the Vin on the door too. It's one of those things you never think about until it's too late

Every response I had was someone trying to trade me something for it.
I told them all to sell whatever they had and to come by with cash.

Yep, everyone on CL wants to trade their pile of crap for something better. I do the same, go sell whatever and come back with cash.

There is no good reason to trade vehicles. Separate transactions for the same amount.

The world is full of crooks.
And getting fuller every day.
I recently had a motorcycle up for sale.
Every response I had was someone trying to trade me something for it.
I told them all to sell whatever they had and to come by with cash.
I also told every single person interested in actually buying it to come over with the full price in cash and then they could 'test ride" the bike.
One guy came buy with a carload of friends to "look" at the bike. I said go ahead and look. But I'm not starting it up until you hand me the cash to hold. They went away.
Finally sold it to another old guy. For cash.
That's sketchy man. A car full of friends. I would of said no from the start. Good thing you did what you did :xyxthumbs:

I agree with you about being stripped. STI parts are nice and pricey.
Sometimes they even switch the VIN in the doors too. Best bet if you can always check the motor. I will always do that.

Wow - just read the threads...I just keep trying to tell myself there are still good people left in this world...HAS to be

exact same thing i ran into when i had my bike listed... the trade seemed to good to be true. same thing with my bike helmet... someone wanted to know where i lived before making a final offer or even showing a true interest? not giving out my address to a random inquiry on the product i am trying to sale.

This is why i'm out of the tuner scene.

I had the same issues, just real scummy people out there, here's a couple of things that happened to me:

  • I was 19 at the time trying to get a sportbike, found a nice low mileaged 04' CBR600RR, the guy said he'd hold it if I gave him cash, seemed like a legit asian guy, so I said sure how does $500 sound and I get the rest a loan? He said sure, well turns out at that age I didn't have enough credit(did not know that I was young), so I couldnt get the loan. I called the guy right away saying sorry man i'm not able to get a loan, i'm gonna need my money back, he said it was my fault for the ONE DAY HE HELD THE BIKE that he might've lost buyers, he's keeping the money. I argued and said NO, you gotta understand I don't make a lot of money I need it back, he said sorry and HUNG UP.
  • Next story I bought a custom bagged S-10 truck from a guy, looked real nice, ran good. I bought it waay over priced, around 8K. That truck gave me so many problems, ended up replacing the engine, I didn't touch the airbag setup, even though later I find out he had sold me a setup that had bent bars in the "reliable 4-Link" it had installed in it. Ended up 15k into that truck total.
  • Next was after being deployed to Iraq I finally got a motorcycle and decided to sell it a year later, I had soo many people trying to trade me pieces of CRAP, my bike was a LOW MILEAGED 06' Yamaha R6 RAVEN. I kept looking at the responses like you serious?
  • Finally, the last 'Fun Vehicle' I bought was a 89' 240sx, setup for drift. Even though my friend said you know it needs a little bit of work it will be reliable with a little bit TLC. Ended up being so not true, that car needed a full rebuild, I only drove it 10 times for the 6 months I owned. Also on top of it, on a 240sx forum, I was scummed out of $280 for coilovers, again my 'nice-ness', gets the best of me. He said he wasn't able to accept paypal, but western union, so I looked up his forum buyer history, looked good, been on the forum a year, alright sure i'll do that. He was all legit until he faked a Tracking Number, I kept calling the UPS Store that I had WUed the money, 'Sorry that number is not in our system'. I was soo MAD, I later sold that car a month later.
Sorry for the vent guys, but after all that, i'm still very upset sometimes. It just sucks enjoying a hobby so much and people have to ruin it by ripping people off.

That thief lives very close to me. I'll be sure to keep an eye out.

That's sketchy to man. You have to watch out for people like that. I have an S2000 and I'm scared to leave it in a parking lot for more then 30 minutes at a time. Its lived most of the 2.75 years with me having it in a garage :xyxthumbs:

Wow dude seems like you went through a rough time with tuning vehicles. I've never actually encountered anything bad like that but I only buy new products because I've heard of so many people getting ripped off.

That thief lives very close to me. I'll be sure to keep an eye out.
He actually changed the wheels out. He put 17" Enkei NT03's on it with a regular alloy color. Who knows though you may run into the guy.

I saw that. I just finished reading through the threads and someone found his Facebook, so I now know what it looks like. But the OP said he is dealing with it, so I hope he gets things fixed.

Me too man me too. I don't really know much on this topic but people were saying it is illegal to sell a car with a false vin number. Maybe this guy can get his Subaru back and this kid can get some jail time. At the very least this has to be a Higher class Misdemeanor if its not a Felony.

Wow that stinks! Back in college I bought a bike from some dude in NY, one of the larger financial mistakes I have made in my life. He had it posted on ebay and ended up not selling it, which should have been a clue. I was probably so awestruck and euphoric about actually buying a bike that things like that did not phase me. Even after driving 4 hours to get the bike I still agreed on the purchase. The next day after starting to take the bike apart to clean it and figure out what it needed, only then I realized the horror and mistake I made. I called the guy up and he said I could bring the bike back but would only give me a 1/3 of what I bought it off of him for. We went rounds a little and then said he would report the bike stolen if I did not complete the transaction (because I still owed him about 5-600, something like that).

Stupid and naive, I paid it and just decided I would fix it up and just enjoy it for what it was. Of course as I do all things, I went way over the top and ended up doing everything and anything to that bike. All said in done it was a "new" bike from front tire to rear, everything was replaced or adjusted, all bearings, fittings, I even replaced some of the farings, gas tank, rear sets. I still have most the receipts and think the total came out to a little over 14k (again young and stupid, it was probably more then that because I had everything on a credit card and it took me a couple years to pay it off). It was a 1995 ZX-9R that I had bought in 2003 just to give you an idea. I wish I would have bought a brand new bike lol, would have cost me less probably!

It never got completed and I ended up moving from the area so I wanted to take the bike with me. I loaded it up and was going to move it temporarily to a storage shed before my move, I accidentally dropped it from the truck when trying to unload it, it hit the ramp then flipped off the ramp onto the ground. There was so much frustration involved, so much money wasted. I ended up selling it to someone for about $4k if I remember correctly, that person got a steal! It did get banged up here and there but the engine was better then new (had a wiesco big bore kit in it that punched it to a 950), a stage-2 dynajet kit installed, full d&d exhaust, new intake (argh cannot remember the brand (would have to look at receipts)). Just to give you an idea as to the attention I had put into it, the rear hub was powder coated to match the bike, along with the bottom of the front forks. I even had a nickel-plated chain and used white grease so it was even nice and shiny. If a part didn't look new or couldn't be reconditioned to look new, I had it replaced.

Anyway, yeah so this isnt as bad as what happened to this guy but this came to mind and how frustrating it is dealing with dishonest people.

Wow Tundra_10 that really blows man. Its really so hard to trust anybody it really is.

Obviously I could have cut my losses, resold the bike and moved on so I should take some of the blame. I guess I wanted to make the best of a bad decision. Again little key things should have thrown me off. When I got there he already had the bike running. The next day I could not get it started without spraying carb cleaner in the carbs. He said it was never in an accident, I removed the farings and the frame had scratches all over it and almost every farring was cracked. The tank was fixed by someone with 2 hams for hands and the bondo job was absolutely horrible. So it was my stupidity, my inexperience, my age, lack of patience to find a more suitable purchase.

Lesson learned...

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Oh and i forgot some of the lights were not working properly. Come to find out the wiring harness had so many shorts in it the shop did not want to mess with it as a liability issue so I had to replace that as well.
