I currently drive a GMC Sierra Crew Cab - it's really nice but I don't have the need for a truck anymore. Living in ND means all different types of weather and several months with snow and ice. I would like to move back to a car with AWD.

I have been looking at the Subaru Legacy and Ford Fusion but can't decide which to purchase. When I was looking at the Legacy's on the dealers lot I noticed almost everyone of them had scratches around the door handles which leads me to believe they have really soft paint if they look like that already.

The Subaru is a little less money and has better resale value but I am leaning towards the Fusion. Anybody have experience with these models that you can share?

Thanks!

The Outback is a very practical car..but has no style, in my opinion. The Fusion looks better, and for that i would go with it. Subaru paint can vary from my experience, but a recent 2015 i did in Silver was super soft ( and also had a lot of small scratches).

I have an Outback '17 and my wife has '17 Fusion. While I love my Outback there is a definite difference in quality between the two. The Ford Fusion I think is better. But there's also a big price difference. Both car handled well in the snow last winter. Can't speak to the Legacy but I'm a truck guy as well but for economical reasons went with the Outback and I'm very happy with that.

I have/had two Subarus that I've driven to over 250000 miles with basically just regular service. Only thing I really had to replace was the battery and tires.

I love them, but it kinda sad to see them blending with the other mundane daily drivers. I always liked how Subarus used to stand out a little from the crowd.

I can't say to much about the Fusion. A good friend does have one that they've had to take in for some small stuff here and there. Right now it needs a water pump replaced, I'm not sure on their mileage.

Fusions have transmission problems dating back to 2012.They still can't fix them my client .leased a 16 ford been in the shop twice. One more time she is bailing out under the lemon law in the state of fla.Subaru is the way to go,great quality car that will last way past a Ford expendacy.Every car has issues but seems like ford products are among the highest.

Piece of gunk just Google all the problems associated with the fusio.People are buying kia and hyndai just can't beat the warranty and very stylish for not that much money. It's like the 05 06 f series power stroke diesel promblems. You will be at the dealer every 3 months with transmission promblems. This is not just heresay my brother and sister in law had the same promblems.Once you by it forget about resale value.know one wants to buy one for this reason .

Mazda 6, hands down! Go and drive the other 2 and then have your checkbook in hand for the Mazda 6, easy choice!!

Legacy or outback for more utility between the two

Lower cost of ownership and better reliability Acura has a car with awd too but priced higher

I'm guessing awd is what you are looking for that takes out a lot of car people are going to recommend that are not awd.

^^ came here to post exactly this. Their Auto Transmissions are poor IMO. We used to use Ford Fusions and SUV's for company cars but they nearly all had Transmission problems. Heat and highway driving seems to kill them. Even my company car which was a 2010 Fusion Sport failed at 62k miles. I like the styling of the new ones but I wouldn't trust it long term.

Just my experience.

wife has a '15 legacy and loves it. no issues other than scheduled maint.

awd and some utility for dogs/gardening stuff were her two requirements. she didn't really shop other vehicles due to so many of her friends raving about subarus.

Personally would go with the Fusion. The subaru we have is nice but the paint swirls really easily and some things I really hate. Uncomfortable steering wheel, cluttered console,no adjustable front seat and its a 40k dollar station wagon.

Fusion drives nicely, and I feel is better value for the money

Well, we have a 2011 Ford Fusion that was my old company car that I drove from new, purchased it when I got my new company car. It has 92,000 miles on the clock, other than a water pump going out, the car has been bullet proof. Lot's and lot's of highway miles. My oldest daughter is a junior in college, she has been driving it for the last two years. Have a 2013 Fusion SE with a 6 speed manual we purchased as a certified used car. So far, no problems. My new company car is a 2016 Ford Fusion SE. I have over 26,000 miles on it, not one issue. Just purchased a 2012 Ford Fusion with 45,500 miles on it for my youngest daughter to drive, she's a junior in high school. These have been absolutely wonderful cars to own. They drive pretty well for a mid size sedan, have good safety ratings, have respectable fuel mileage and have been a joy to own.

There were some issues, but it's not nearly as widespread as you think. Also, sorry to hear about your client's issues - She clearly got a problem child, but I'd hardly use that one example as condemnation of the entire line.

Properly maintained, a Fusion can last a LONG time and go tons of miles..

.. case in point - my 2010. These pics are following my 55-mile commute home from work today (110 miles round trip):

Gave the car a bit of a quick wash, since it was pretty covered in dust from today's gusting winds. Sorry about the poor lighting - It was about 7:30 PM.

FYI - the mileage is all original, on the original engine and trans. I put about 30,000 miles a year on the car, and do a drain & fill on the trans every 25,000-30,000 miles.

I got my daughter this brand new 2016 Altima SR for $16,500 tax tag title off the lot. Back up camera, 18" wheels, nice stereo, upgraded interior, made in the USA, not Mexico like the Fusion. 38 mpg highway. It's a great car.

The Rogue "SL" is another great choice and it comes in AWD

Forward looking 360 camera

Rear 360 camera

The 2017 interior has been revised too.

I average city / hwy 28 mpg.

another option which has gotten a lot of great reviews (especially from this guy in the 1st video below as he is hard to impress most of the time) is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport...

and also re-designed Hyundai Sonata..

Nice car, but too small for this comparison, not same size class as mid size sedans, Fusion, Altima, Sonata etc.

And as you know we own a 2015 Sonata too.

I ask my friend about his the other day and he said the water pump was the only real issue they had. Brake noise that the dealership couldn't hear was the other small one. I forgot to ask how many miles they had on it, I'd imagine it's got quite a few.

Oh man, Klasse Act and I have a running joke about Fusions! Living in the Metro Detroit area plus having a 64 mile roundtrip commute to work, I see on average 50-60 Fusions a day. They must lease really cheap here. I am sure they are nice cars but around my parts they are belly button cars! Everyone has one! While the Legacy isn't the prettiest girl, the symmetrical AWD has been around a long time and is pretty well perfected IMO.

Subarus are notorious for soft paint. But also know what they are known for? Durability and safety! Subarus have been outperforming cars in crash tests for a long time. They were among the first cars to pass the IIHS crash tests when they started. People who own them, generally tend to love them, and tend to be very loyal to the brand. Subaru is also the only car company that has had continual sales growth even during the recession. The Cabin tech is finally catching up to the industry. But when it comes to bulletproof reliability and durability, they simply cant be beat.

Fords on the other hand in general, do not have the best reliability records, does not matter the car. Someone mentioned only had to replace a water pump at 90k miles. Water pumps shouldnt fail at 90k miles at all!

A friend of mine bought the first generation WRX when he got married for himself and he loved it. He just bought a new Forester Turbo, that he intends to drive for 5 or 6 years and then hand over to his daughter when she starts driving. He has that much confidence in the brand that he knows the car will be good in that time to give to his daughter.
