I feel your pain.

I've see people do other things like place thick blankets and even cardboard on top of the car to stop hail damage.

A car cover will not prevent hail damage. I would find a local parking garage to temporarily park your vehicle out of harms way. If you do get some hail damage you can contact a "PDR" Paintless Dent Removal person in your area. Good luck!
