So I was working on a customers 51 Chevy Truck yesterday when I was driving it back to the customers house had a little problem. I was driving on the freeway and just getting off on the exit when someone cut me off at the last moment trying to get off the freeway. they drove through all the dirt and rocks that build up between the freeway and the exit. Then all of a sudden I heard a thump on the roof and I knew what had just happen :(. So I tried to catch the lady who cut me off but couldn't catch her. When I got to the customers house I had to show him what had happen to his car. He was not mad really he under stood it could happen no matter who was driving the car. I told him he didn't have to pay me and I would have it fix for him. He said no he was going to have parts of the truck repainted so he would just get it fixed then. He is the kicker He paid me and even gave me a big tip :). This is why I'm glad I have insurance so when something like this happens I covered.


 
What a nice customer. Unfortunate about the damage, beautiful truck nonetheless. +1 on insurance.
 
+2 for insurance. You never ever know what could happen. Working without it is a huge risk and one certainly not worth taking.

hum... i will have to shop for insurrance this week. i am not so sure it's worth it unless you work on very expensive car.
how much do you guys pay per month and how frequently do you need to make claims? the way i see it is that you are better off paying for the repair because it will be far less expensive on the long run. if you work on exotic cars then it is a different story.

I guess if you have the insurance you can always pay for repairs directly and not submit a claim. If it's better to submit the claim I guess it's a business deduction that would lower the net expense.

Delivering cars is a nice service but can be problematic.

Hmm have you seen a vw r32? The blue pearl paint runs about $600 a quart... and thats factory... custom paint can run you big money... ghost flames... hand painted pin stripes everything is case by case.... too many variables... your insurance rates are going to depend on how many cars you do. Its not expensive...

Its like any other insurance... its annoying to pay every month or year and 98% of the time you never use it/need it... UNTIL you need it...

Yeah I never thought about insurance until I joined AG. I never really had to since I worked for a body shop, and 99.9% do close friends and family.

However when I set up shop, insurance sounds like a must have.

Exactly.

OP- This is also why most of my customers pick up and drop off their cars for me. I do occasionally deliver though. What I dread is an accident, most dings or scratches can be fixed for the same amt as a deductible. But if the car rolls or is in some type of severe collision that could be problematic to say the least.
 
I carter to my customers and some of them are very wealthy customers. They don't want to drop it off or come back later so I pick their cars up for them. When they pay you me the kind of money they do for this service its worth it and most them double my fee for this service. It comes down to are you willing to take the chance of something happing and this is why you have insurance for. I'm willing to do this for high end customers only.

Not to knock you and just being honest here but you really shouldn't be operating a detailing business without insurance. It's a huge disservice and liability for you and your customer. I would never trust my vehicle (or anything) to a company who is not licensed and bonded. Even if you're working on a old and rusty car worth only $1,000, I hope you have the cash available in the event of an accident.

I use State Farm and my garage keeps insurance is $30 a month and I have extra so when I do drive their cars it's covered.

It was just a wash/wax and polish the chrome this time. He is booked in mid September for a full paint correction I'll do a wright up then.
 
Well if the insurrance is just 30$ per month, then it's a no brainer. But here in Canada insurrance is super expensive, I am expecting quotes from 10 to 20 times what you are paying.

Even in the US it varies from state to state.
 
Don't mean to jack your thread but mobile detailers beware. I'm a mobile detailer. I've been detailing for 8 years and just last Thursday I accidentally damaged a customer's car. My insurance " State Farm" denied the claim. Why? Well because I'm mobile, I did not rent or owned the property in which the accident happened. Great, I was paying insurance and never covered. For those of you mobile guys looking to get or already have insurance, make sure you are covered.

Seems like you didn't do your research on your insurance sorry to hear this happen to you :(
