Yeah the one i hate most is when they ask you if you want to donate for some sort of cause ie brest cancer, hunger, animals the guys ringing the bell for st judes in front of every store around xmas... I hate it especially since i worked for a pizza place when i was younger and we had one of those jars. Best part is it was never donated to what ever cause it was the owner of the store would pocket it.

i went to joe's crab shack last night with my nephew and family friend and while they were busy, their service wasn't very good as well as the food. on the bottom of the bill was a suggested gratuity which i felt wasn't even close to giving given the service we received. can't say i'll ever go back again...

Around here we refer to that place as Joe's Crap Shack

We should have Tip Jars and if the vehicle needs a lot of extra work. We should include it in the gratuity bill lol (kidding)

Years, years back I was driving one day and exited the fwy to go to my destination. This guy was asking for money and was holding a sign, it said something along the lines of "Need money for food, I accept cash, Visa and Mastercard"

haha it made me laugh so I gave him some money and a little extra for making me laugh lol. I should go back and tell him to include PayPal to keep up with the times. Even funnier would be if it said to add him on FaceBook. hahahahahahaha

What really gripes me is my neighbor wanting to borrow my lawn mower. Go get your own!

I assume some waitresses don't even know that the employer is required to make up the difference and others are afraid to ask. It's something to keep in mind next time a waitress tells you they rely on tips.

Relying on tips is a flawed argument from the start, I rely on customers, it doesn't mean I expect them to repeat business if I do a poor job or pay me extra for the job I do. I'd love if they would all tip though, some interiors can drive me crazy with my OCD.

I do tip when eating out. But tip jars? NO. No one tips me at my job.

I do remember those who do tip. They get put @ the top of my list. I had a customer once who told me what the meaning of T.I.P.S. was:

I doubt the company sponsored it since there is no financial control. It sounds fishy to me and demand a receipt. I would suggest calling the police. No company is going to rely on that method to recoup anything. It may be the huge company passed on some expense to the store and they decided to recoup it themselves but still illegal since they have to report it as income. Without any record of the transaction, it goes into th pocket.

The people at door's of Walmart for some activity (band trips, etc) can get pushy at times --going in and coming out.

Honestly, I don't care if there is a tip jar unless they verbally ask me. Then it is annoying.

I tip 20% at restaurants and 33% on a hair cut. If the service is bad, they barely get a thing from me. Sometimes I will add to a tip jar whether it is their job or not. If they do it exceptionally well, I will usually leave a tip.

People sometimes tip me at work and I have no idea why because I don't provide a service, but I guess being friendly goes a long way.

The stigma of not tipping in general is BS. People in jobs like waitressing try to claim it is your duty to subsidize their wage and it is not. If the employee’s tips combined with the employer’s direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage ($7.25 right now), the employer must make up the difference. Don't like it? don't work a minimum wage job OR earn the tip.

I will tip if the service is above and beyond what you would normally expect but to expect a tip to me is crazy. Heck I go above and beyond in all the jobs I do and I don't look for a tip.

Any tip jars at places like self serve is just insane. I know my opinion is not the popular one but you have to work for your money, if you aren't being paid something you feel ok with and expect subsidization by the customer not your employer things are a little upside down. We choose our prices based on what we end up making per hour, how do you think it would work out if we offered to work at a next to nothing rate and asked for tips?

While I agree with most about tip jars being inappropriate in many cases, dining in a full service restaurant is a different situation all together.

When you choose to go to a restaurant where you are served by a waiter/waitress you are entering a common knowledge social norm. You know the server expects a tip for service. By choosing not to give a tip you are taking advantage of the socially accepted transaction without holding up your end of the deal. If you really feel that tipping should not be necessary, please inform the server at the beginning of the transaction. Otherwise you are just a cheap ass looking for a reason to save a buck.

Look at it from a detailer's perspective. If you detailed someones vehicle expecting to be paid and they pointed out the one area you missed and said "I'll pay you for the materials used but not the labor since you didn't meet my expectations." would you simply think "Gee, maybe I should find another line of work."?

I absolutely agree with you. Why should I leave a tip when they are not providing a service to me other then taking my order and payment.

You know what else is annoying? When you are constantly being asked for donations for local traveling soccer, baseball, and softball youth travel teams. The kids parents should be the ones that are paying. I paid for all my kids. Just a pet peeve I have. Just like those landscapers with the blowers and weed wackers. Just annoying getting my recently detailed cars getting the dirt on them. I can keep going on.

I like those guys too but they are rare. So if I'm in the mood to donate (which I am not very often anymore - I have my own issues to deal with)...I ask them to dance a jig for me. They usually do and I give 'em a buck or two.

I caught one of these guys one day leaving his "spot" and get in his BMW in the grocery store lot and drive away. This is what made me rethink the whole "generous" concept. Even charities...most of your money goes to the "non-profit salaries and bonuses" of the founder(s). Not much makes it to the people that need the money.

You want to be nice and generous? find a kid in your neighborhood that needs, and be a giver to them. You know it is going to someone and they will appreciate it - and you'll know what they do with your generosity instead of the great unknown.

We got a call from a charity asking for money and asked how much goes to the charity. They provided the percentages and the majority did not go the cause (some cancer related one). It was fundraising and overhead.

Tips are fine, in fact necessary in situations where an individual is paid primarily with tips. Donations on the other hand are usually conceived very carefully by organized entities that in many cases keep a vast majority of proceeds that are never distributed to the "cause". Fund raising is big "business"

The pet store I frequent has a jar, but that money goes to one of the local rescue groups. I don't have a problem at all with this and am glad they have it there. I make a donation and am happy to do so in honor of my pets and the joy they bring me. The lady that brings my newspaper EVERY MORNING (yes, I still read the newspaper) always leaves me a cheesy ChristX card around that time of year, I get the message and am happy to oblige her cuz I see the crappy car she drives and she's here EVERY MORNING regardless. Waiters/Waitresess get 20% or more

I to get the paper delivered but I will not tip as the paper is never on the front stoop. The delivery person leaves it were ever. When I have my sprinklers on the paper is wet. So why should I tip when they do not do a job they are suppose to do? As far as waiters/waitresses I tip accordingly. If service is good 20%. If bad 15%. I know here in NJ they get like $2-3.00 an hour.

I was just thinking about this! Yesterday I go into Jersey mikes (a sandwich joint) and on the credit card swiper it ask how much you want to tip, 10, 15, or 20%. I couldn't believe it. 2.00 tip to make a sandwich that took a minute to make. I don't feel its my responsibility to compensate for your employers lack of compensation. Most of these tip jars now-a-days are out when no service it being performed, and doing the job you are paid to do is not a service. Full service restaurants, haircuts, and during Christmas ill leave a card and cash for the waste disposal guys, the other crap can kick the curb.

I got the "stink eye" the other day when I didn't leave a tip when I picked up a pizza at the local Pizza Hut. I was like, what? Why should I leave a tip when I came to get the pizza. On top of that, who am I tipping? The person taking my money or the person making the pizza?

With that being said, I've worked in food service before, and it's tough. But I never took anything for granted and always worked hard for a tip, not just staring someone down or smirking if they didn't leave anything.

In the business world you have to pass along whatever increases come your way unless they are self inflicted

There was a story here a few years back about a guy that stood on the Interstate exit ramp with a "Will Work 4 Food Sign" He boasted himself that he was pulling down $500 per day and that he had a very nice home/car

I occasionally will give $ to a homeless person, but generally offer to go get them food and bring it back. More times then not they accept and seem genuinely grateful. I don't mind helping someone who is down on their luck or may even be addicted to drugs/alcohol. A few dollars to fill someones stomach or perhaps show them that someone does care about them is worth a few bucks for me personally

It's these Tip Jars that make me loose my mind!
