Tips Cleaning chrome exhaust tips and aluminum trim

How bad are your exhaust tips?
When I got my Golf R, the inner tips (2 tips on each side) were caked with carbon and essentially black.

I tried many options (with what I had on hand) and I ended up using some WD-40 and balled up aluminum foil. That worked very well. I don't have any chrome polish or never dull, so those weren't options.
I attempted using a Magic Eraser and that did a little bit, but I destroyed the pad fairly quick.

Now that they are clean, they've stayed fairly clean with regular washing.

The tips on my GTI would need constant attention and after a long winter were almost impossible to get perfectly clean. There is something about those VAG 4-cyclinder engines that make the exhausts accumulate more soot than any other car I've owned regardless of engine size.

Its funny because i traded in my GTI for the s4. I never spent much time on the tips besides a quick rub down when washing. They were low and mostly hidden so they didnt bug me.
