Tips on laying the foundation of a home detailing business?

There are 2 must read books to start:

1. Renny Doyle's book: How to Start a Home-Based Car Detailing Business. This books will cover pretty much everything you need to know except detailing techniques.

2. Mike Philipps: The art of detailin. This book covers all the techniques you need to know for cleaning, paint correction and car protection. Very well written, lots of pictures. It's a must have.

Good luck with your project.

Regarding polishing, if you are serious about your business I suggest you upgrade to something more powerful than the Porter Cable. Either a Rupes Bigfoot 21 or a Flex 3401. The PC takes too long to do it's work and you will be loosing money using it.

The PC or the Griot's is fine to start with I have both and they work great just get MF pads.

yes. the Rupes is overkill imo for beginners. too much of a learning curve when first starting off

Make sure the property is zoned for commercial use. If not the town/city/whatever will shut you down and possibly fine you.

Find this out before you spend any money on anything else. If you have to have the property rezoned you'll have to go to a hearing. Also, find out if you can have a business sign and what the size is allowed. If you want to exceed that size you'll need to go to another hearing.

I had to have my cities environment agency ok my business out of my garage and my HOA had to approve it also.

I agree. I used to correct with rotary and finish down with a da. The microfiber system has changed this.

Imo its perfectly fine, and probably best to start out with a pc ...but preferably a griots.

There are more important things to invest in, other than a $400 polisher.

I think its good to set goals...like a 1000-$1500 week and then reward yourself with something like a ptg or a rupes

to be honest, I wouldn't even think about a business as a detailer when you don't master a DA... start of as a valeter and get your name up.
starting with a griot is just fine. try one good compound and polish and master it. Take your time and practice, practice, practice. you don't want to mess up a car, it will put your name down.
