Tire coating prep for new tires

I only use Super Clean in the gallon for clean up around the garage. I’ll have to try the kind in the can as shown

I have 303 T&R and TufShine. I like the 303 T&R better. Once my coatings are used up i will be going back to tire shines.


On low pro tires the side walls tend to abrade on cornering and rubs of a little on the side. This leaves 20% of the side wall looking scuff so need to reapply anyways.

Not a big problem on a bigger tire as it is a smaller percentage of side wall thats scuffed

I used 303 and tuff shine about 4x over the course of around 60 days before applying the coating. In hindsight, probably applied too thin.

So sounds like you prepped properly assuming your last cleaning only showed white and no more brown.

My experience with tire coatings is to put another coat than you'd want from a look perspective as the look will calm down within a few days. Initially after putting 2 or 3 coats on, the tires look TOO glossy and TOO bright but within 2-3 days, the look calms down to a nice gloss. That's been my experience at least.

And who knew I don't only have to be careful about my rims when trying to get close to a curb in a parking lot but not too close is somewhat stressful because if you scrape the edge of the tire, it is very noticeable.

I fight this on my personal cars all the time and it's one several reasons why I don't bother with a coating. After any autocross or hard drive, I'll get wear right down to where the the tread blocks meet the sidewall. On most performance tires, that area wraps down onto the visible area of the tire when looking at them straight on. I always have a dressed sidewall ringed by warn/dirty tread block edges.

Once scuffed a bit, those tread blocks never really take a dressing very well.

I recently tried the Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Tire and Wheel cleaner, followed by Optimum Power Clean at full strength. The combination did a very nice job, but I decided I liked the clean, black look so much I didn't put anything on them
