So, I'm looking to rent my first fixed location shop for my detailing business, and all the options I'm coming across are much larger than what I really need. I came up with the idea of utilizing part of the space to store tires and/or wheels and charge a fee to do so to offset the rent (and hopefully eventually pay it completely). (FREE SHOP!!) :D

I live in a mountain town that gets snow in the winter, so a large percentage of the 80,000 people that live here have snow tires. There's one small tire shop in town that will store them for you, but that's it. I would wash/dry (seal or coat for an additional fee) them and store them properly, and it would bring them back to the shop twice a year, possibly increasing the need for detailing too (increased exposure).

What are your guys' thoughts on such an idea? Any suggestions or ideas that could go along with it. There was a high-end detail shop back in Seattle that offered it that first sparked the idea.

I'd say it's a great idea over there in Bend. My only suggestion is talk to your insurance provider and make sure you're covered, wheels and tires can get expensive quickly.

Just a question: Are you just 'storing' or will you be also swapping out the tire/wheels?

My question also. And the insurance question was a smart one, unless it's just a bunch of steelies.

I would think there could be a zoning (what ever it is called) issue along with insurance. When there is a tire fire it is pretty nasty. Just saying, check all the options.

Wow, interesting--is there some sort of special permitting required for a tire shop?

Who's here old enough to remember when this was a free country.
I miss those Fall afternoons when I was a kid with the fragrant smell of leaves being burned in garbage cans.

I think the tire storage for extra income is a great idea assuming all the zoning/insurance is figured out.

Or the combined smell of leaves and tires when someone parked on a pile.

Not really sure and it would differ in areas. The Governments, Fed,State,County.Cities etc. have their noses in everything else we do so I do not see any difference with this. We use to burn leaves all the time in Eastern Pa. then it was outlawed, the Ice Age was coming you know.

IMO:
Should be easy enough to find out through the zoning agency
that issued the Detailing Business its operating license, if that
license will also permit (or not permit, as the case may be)
any "industrial-type" of warehousing; and/or: to also use it as
a bulk indoor storage facility.

Another benefit of burning, aside from the pleasant odor, no piles in the street.

Well, you have said garbage cans, I have heard of people having incinerator pits in their driveway they burned leaves in, back when it was legal here I remember someone burning a pile at the curb and setting their lawn on fire when it was dry like now.

Ah, the good old days.
Today we have so many lawyers, Brooklyn Law is giving refunds to those who can't find jobs.

Thanks guys! I'll definitely look into making sure all licenses and insurance stuff will be taken care of first, hopefully it's not too crazy, but you guys are making me a little nervous. I guess that's just the times we live in.

Sounds like I probably would have liked those "good 'ol days"
