tonnoe cover residue

A friend of mine bought an aftermarket tonneau cover (vinyl) for his truck. He did not put anything on it. When you touch it there is an oily residue all over it and when it rained it ran down the sides of the bed. After seeing this he cleaned it with 303 convertible top cleaner and a soft brush and rinsed it well after. It rained again and did the same thing. Has anyone ever seen this before in new vinyl tops or tonneaus? Any suggestions on how to make it stop? I recommended he try some Megs APC I have, but would like some suggestions before he does. Any input is greatly appreciated.

WOW! I'm not sure what the product is but I'd like to know. Back in the day before all the new car products were here. I used baby oil on the half vinyl top of my 79 Pontiac Firebird. It was black diamond shaped. It looked good until it rained and all my windows needed cleaning. LOL! The plastic cladding on Avalanches seems to ash up,even after a through cleaning. When ever I run into that type on rubber(plastic),I clean it with Awesome full strength,scrub,rinse,and repeat. I am still looking for the perfect dressing for this surface. Help Mike!

This is why I love my hard cover. You can try cleaning it with APC and put a light coat of protection on. If you put it on heavy seems like it always comes off on paint.

Yea we have no idea what it is, it was on the cover when he bought it.

I use 303 Aerospace Protectant on my convertible top and it has never ran onto the paint, that is what he want to put on his cover if he can ever get the other stuff off.

I used that 303 on my tonneau about 3 weeks ago, after applying it, I wiped it off, I let it dry for a while, then re-wiped it down. A couple days later it rained and I had a little residue going down the sides of my truck. After the rain wiped the tonneau down again. And it has been raining off an on for the past few weeks and no more run off on the side of my truck. Tonneau still looks good, darker and wipes off easier after using that 303 instead of that Tonneau Tonic! Don't know if that helped you, just my experience with it so far. And I would use it again!
