Way too many projects my wife and I own five cars between us. We have a three car garage and have two four post lifts ,but not enough ceiling room to put my wife's just restored black Mercedes-Benz 300-E on the bottom and my ford mustang Cobra on the top.

I had an Idea one of our neighbors uses a tent she purchased long ago that is rain proof and gives some protection to store the car during rainy months.

I need to do something quick on the fly before the car comes home next week. I was thinking about contacting northern and getting the widest tent they have to stick into the ground were the previous owner put his RV. It is extra space that is wasted.

If anyone has some ideas please let me know I hate to ruin this car and leave it out again with a cheap car car cover. I like to preserve it as long as I can the car is already
12 years old comes new year but does not look it, thanks to my car.

Hi Bob,

Cars and the proper space to store or protect them isn't always easy. Buying another car and bringing it home can take as little as an hour but providing proper permanent storage can take months to build.

Those car tents you refer to are a great way to provide years of protection and go up in a matter of hours not weeks or months. When I ran out of room in my 3 car garage I bought one to keep my daily driver in and it's worked out handily. I've had it for 5 or 6 years now and no signs of leakage and it does a great job of protecting my truck...

Don't forget to secure it to the ground.....

I can make room in my garage in Florida. Your choice, Benz or Mustang.

Ah, the problems of rich people..."My giant garage with two lifts isn't big enough for all of my expensive cars! Did I mention I have a Cobra AND a Mercedes?" /James William Bottomtooth Voice

What kind of car is it that you are trying to store that will get "ruined" in the rain?

What do you do for a living?

Ask a freind if you can store one or two at their place

Freind request sent :)

sorry to hear of your troubles. Hire 5 construction companies or one large one to build a new structure in one week. To get around the concrete curing issue of the foundation have them bring in prefab concrete piers and slabs.

I believe everyone, at one point or another, has decided they need a larger garage.

As for the tent, might check over at garagejournal.com

A few members there have opted to have the aluminum car ports delivered and then sheet the sides with metal, wood or canvas to protect the car for winter.

a few images from google can help you in deciding what will work best for your car. here is a helpful link

and see the attached image. I believe that is the same version someone "closed" in to protect their car for winter.

hope it helps!

Not knowing either the area of the country you reside; or, the length of time you plan on the outdoor storage for your incoming vehicle....A temporary storage facility, you mentioned putting up a tent, may indeed be the cat's meow for your: "I need to do something quick on the fly".

However, you should keep in mind that outdoor storage of a vehicle, even under a tent, requires some extra precautions.

1.) Parking a vehicle on grassy surfaces invites unneeded moisture collecting upon the vehicle...especially the undercarriage...that possibly would start, or accelerate the oxidation process on unprotected metal surfaces. One solution: Lay down a heavy gauge tarp/plastic over the entire area covered by the tent. Cover that with plywood.
2.) Leave the vehicle's windows rolled down a smidgeon
3.) Place desiccant packs on the floorboards
4.) Over-inflate tires by 5-10 psi
5.) Either fill the gas tank, or run it completely dry.
6.) But I digress....There are more storage steps that I'm sure you're aware of...being that you store a lot of vehicles, anyway.

7.) But I have to add...Rodent and Varmit Proof the outdoor stored vehicle.... even more than you do for indoor storage!!!

Nothing attracts these critters more than a tent....The smell of damp canvas probably reminds them of their childhood dreams of:....Going to be a star in Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Three Ring Circus. You don't want to become the ringmaster!!

Also:
Charging an entrance fee for your curious neighbors (another type of varmit) might help defray the costs of your tent purchase.

LOL, thats awesome Bob!

Thanks Corey....

Thinking back....A year ago today I was just a twinkle in the AGO forum's eye!!! It's been (at the time of this posting) a FUNX1540 year. :D

Here in the Northern states there are all kinds of vehicle storage garages for the winter months. Can range from $200-$1000 for the winter depending on boat or car, location, heat and time in storage and other ammenities. Most are November to March.

Long term option is a bigger garage. Short term option is one of those tents if you can place it out of the way.

You could speak with one of your local Ford dealers and see if they would be intrested in displaying one or two of them (Mustang/Cobra) on their showroom floor for a few months. Only bad thing here is ppl will be touching it and wiping on it with a dirty rag

Another option would be to seek a short term lease on warehouse space. The commercial real estate market is very stagnant now, so maybe you could find someone intrested in doing this. If you plan on continuing your collection, now may be a good time to purchase a piece of commercial property as a future investment
