This makes sense as all South African GTi's are imported from Germany.
 
Wow. A 3 step left you with that? Not much left to say that hasn't already been said. I'd be real upset if I was left with that. Either he did a one step and told/charged you for 3 or did and didn't do it right.

Then again there's always 2 sides to every story. What do we know about the condition of the paint beforehand? Did he measure the thickness? Was there not enough paint left to safely remove everything? So many questions.

I'm happy to see that you are asking questions and looking for answers rather than publicly coming out and bashing the guy. Perhaps there is a good explanation for it.
 
I don't know if paint was in such bad condition, how bad can a 5 months old car (washed 1 time in automatic car wash, and 5-6 times by hand, but sadly not with proper technique as i've stated before) be anyway?

I've measured the paint thickness some time ago because i have the gauge (i tend to change cars quickly, so it's always useful to have it), and if i remember correctly it was in 120-140 microns range.

I won't publicly bash the guy even if we don't find mutual agreement, i'm just not that type of person, but i won't recommend him to my friends, that's for sure.

The more i read this forum and other detailing sources, the more i'm getting hooked into this "scene", so i even started thinking about getting some equipment and doing things on my own. My uncle owns a body shop, so i can get some old panels for practice first without a problem. We'll see... :)

This is pretty much how and why I started.

My Story : Hack detailer did a one step with AIO (Megs D151 i think) and full interior work on my MK7 Gti. Paid less than $100 after conversion, this was a groupon and he had rave reviews, and a website that talked about Refining with a DA, claying...the works.

Interior was alright, left a ton of some oily dressing, engine bay was nice, paint looked great. A few days later the wax from the AIO was wearing off and the entire paint was covered in holograms. Clearly they did the one step using a Rotary buffer and not their true description of refining with a DA after the cutting stage (groupon after all) - maybe they would have done a better job if I paid full price of close to $300. They had a ton of cars in the shop. Even the interior still had that wet/moisture smell....not sure how to put it. But ofcourse carpets and such were still wet so yeah.

I had the same done to my MK6 Gti in 2012 using another detailer (also groupon) , similar work, but at that time I was impressed - mostly because that car was uncared for, but only with the exterior. Interior was clean but I had fabric seats - the moisture smell stayed for wayyyyy longer.

Anyways, back to MK7 - All exterior, interior and engine were done in 8 hours....I had them redo the car not knowing what holograms were. Ofcourse re-doing the car did nothing...as they just redid it with a rotary lol. And then found this website and opened up to a world of knowledge.

The rest as they say.....is history.

I now polish my own cars, and family cars and have received plenty of requests from friends as well.
 
What kind of car wash was it? Touch less or did it have some sort of brush?
 
I have owned VWs since 1998. The paint is getting softer and softer. It's almost obviously softer between my mk6 gti and mk7 gti. Granted my mk6 came from Wolfsburg and the MK7 from Mexico.

As far as I know the paint is the same, and I live on some VW forums, never heard a mention of paint being different here vs over seas.

Sounds like one of the high volume chains near me. I even had a potential customer ask to have me match their Groupon deal of $100 inside/out. Told them no, its not the same level of work
 
3 step?? You ought be able to get back from 3000 wet sand in 3 steps.. let a lone some light swirls..
Something was over looked.....

Easy, have a chat with him about it and see what you get.
If no joy use the money to buy your own kit knowing you can do better work than you recieved for relatively little outlay....

I think this is only true for GTI's and regular Golf's. From what I understand, the R's are still built in Germany due to the AWD drive train. I don't think the Mexico plant is producing AWD cars (i.e. the R) until MY17 or MY18. We'd need to compare VIN's to know for sure.
 
I actually did a new red jetta the other day in the same color. Using megs D 300 / 302 I was able to make a scratched / swirled / sapped roof / hood / trunk near perfect, and then 301 the entire car in under an hour.

I would not be satified with that result and have corrected Mk7's and found the paint to be pretty reasonable.. certainly not soft but not difficult to remove swirls. i din't even use wool or MF on it.. just a heavy cut foam pad (Lake country yellow and Scholl S3 as i recall.. being the most agressive).
with Scholl S20 and Scholl blue spider for the majority and it was glass like afterwards....

I would discuss the results with the detailer.... it is possible a panel was missed due to interuption or some event during the work.. thats not good but folks do make mistakes.. (benefit of the doubt here),..

See what they say.
