Hello there Mike, and fellow forum goers :)

I'm a total noob to detailing, and am after some advice before I make any mistakes!

I have a 2009 Subaru Legacy with a white pearl finish. Portions of the car have Venture Shield film applied to protect the paint (similar to the 3M Protective Shield). The car is never garaged, so it's exposed to the elements 24 hours a day.

I'm just after advice for good products to protect the finish. I plan to clay bar, use swirl remover and finishing glaze, then apply wax or sealant. My first question is: when I had the protective film installed, I was told I could wax over it as if it were a normal painted surface. Does anyone have any experience with this? Also wondering if the earlier steps (clay bar etc) should also be used on the film?

I'm considering buying a Porter Cable, either way I'd love some advice on which pads to use (are pads for the PC graded the same as the ones you'd use by hand?). How many pads/microfiber cloths would you think I'd need for the job?

And finally, I've heard some waxes/sealants are better for light colored cars....or cars with metallic flecks like pearled paint. The combination I was thinking of using is possibly one of the Collinite products followed by Natty's Wax. Does this sound like a good combination for my car? Durability is definitely important! Can I use this on my rims as well?

Thanks in advance for reading this and passing along advice. As I said I'm totally new to this, so am really happy to have found a resource to help make the right decisions!
