While I was detailing a car, the UDM broke on me yet again. Last time the whole counterweight assembly separated from the machine, this time the mounting hole for the backing plate separated. Looks like I'll be contacting them again. It seems the UDM gets way too hot on speed 6 causing components to separate.

Did anyone else have this issue?

there warranty is said to be second to none, they even pay the shipping for repair. I can start to see however why they no longer are offering it and rebadged the PC going forward. Let us know which machine you receive as I wonder if they have any stock left for warranty repairs.

killr,

When you say "rebadged"...can you explain alittle more...did PC take over the UDM line?? What's your opinion of the Meguiar G110 vs. the rebadged UDM?? I'm alittle confused. Thanks.

Version 2 of the UDM is now a Porter Cable relabeled. It is called the Ultimate Detailing Machine by Porter Cable.

As offered above it appears that the UDM is simply a PC with UDM badges going forward. Likely a 7424 or 7336 repackaged for them thru Porter Cable.

The Megs unit is said to be a bit more powerful, but I have not played with it. I got the Flex and so happy now that I dont see the need. (not a slight to any machine in particular)

I haven't had a chance to contact UDM, but I will look into it and see if I get a rebadged PC. It's a good thing I still have my trusty PC to work with when the UDM fails.

Update: Received a brand new UDM today and not a re-badged PC.

At least they didn't send me a refurbished one. It was a brand new still in the wrappers UDM. Running it a speed 6 seems to be the culprit to my past issues. I guess I'll just have to turn it down.

That seems to be the least they could do after putting out such a bad product.

I agree... But to not run it on speed 6 is not acceptable considering the *extra* power was the main selling point of this unit... How many have you killed???

I would ask (insist) on a refund so that I could purchase the flex (or a makita:D)

^this is my third one within a one year period.

I had the exact same problem with mine about a month ago (metal post fell out of the center). Unfortunately, I was outside of the warranty period by about 3 months. I tossed it in the trash and went back to my PC for doing 1-steps or waxing. I've still got a Flex and a couple rotaries for bigger jobs, although the Flex gets used less and less.

My UDM just died on me today, something internally is wrong. A few weeks ago I notices a significant drop in power and then today the speeds were pulsating (from like speed 6 to 1 back to 6 to 1, etc.). I agree with Jason about not using speed 6 ... that was what made the UDM slightly better than a PC, a more powerful speed 6. Everything else was fairly similar speed wise, but I will give the UDM a nod for speed 6. But with junky reliability and harsh vibrations, one should look at a different machine.

Now that I'm outside of warranty, I will just have to keep it down to speed 5 so I don't run the risk of breaking it again. At least I will have my reliable PC.

^^^ Good luck! I never used mine on speed 6 and it still broke on me! 5 on the PC or UDM is as high as I ever go.

Does anyone know what the problem is? It sounds like the motor brushes are failing prematurely and if people are seeing the same problem then they have not really addressed the design issue.
