Ultima: "Clearly Different"! What makes it so?

During the time of the BP oil spill here in the gulf, Ultima came into somewhat of a problem. In an effort to dissolve the oil and follow EPA regs the crews were using the very same synthetic distillate that Ultima uses! This in turn meant it was suddenly in short supply and near impossible to obtain.

Hi Corey...
-Thanks for your time and effort in gathering this info in order to present this thread/posting. No doubt, Ultima has many excellent offerings.

-The BP Gulf Oil Spill was indeed a very traumatic event...First: Precious lives were lost. Second: An environmental disaster.

-Notwithstanding the Ultima line-up, many other car care products' line-ups were also impacted during/by BP's use of oil-spill fighting "chemicals" in the Gulf. But...
a. There were world-wide protests from environmental activists against BP using these "chemical-short-cuts".
b. I, for one, have noticed the jump in price-increases for many car care products.

-It's possible that many synthetic distillates may be 'manufactured' from organic distillates; and that, further, through, for example, esterfication and saponification processes, these distillates are then more VOC compliant.

-Would you be so kind to inquire of your Ultima contact(s) if the reduction in the "chemicals" they require to have their product line-up manufactured was/is related to BP's usage of their sourced 'chemical-oil-fighters'...

In specific:
COREXIT 9500A; COREXIT(R) EC9527A; and (Cheap Insurance)/C.I.Agent?

Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to receive/share in regards to the above inquiry.

:)

Bob

Awesome info...thanks!
I didn't even know UWW+ would work on bugs. I'm going to try that next time.

Great write up Dog! Ultima is a great line, that seems to accel at everything they do!

I will certainly do that Bob! I'll get back to you :)

Awesome info...thanks!

It does! just leave it on a bit and it works much better than you would expect.

Everything you just said about Ultima it 100% true IMO! Every product I've used of theirs has replaced the products I was using. I've used Ultima+ Waterless Wash +, Ultima Interior Guard +, and Ultima Tire and Trim Guard. All are top notch products that I use exclusively for their intended uses.

Does the VOC-free formula mean I can use UTT&G for the interior of my car? I used it once a few months ago because the dash was beginning to fade and I was trying to restore it, then I realized it was made with petroleum distillates and thought I may be messing with my health. Now it seems it is safe to use inside after all.
... On using it on the interior let me get an answer from Rick or Sam just to be absolutely certain. Will get back asap.

Hi Corey. Before I use UTT&G for my car's interior, I want to make sure the Q & A below is the answer to my question above? I don't want to use it for my interior if it's going to be detrimental to my health. Thanks Corey!

5Q.-I receive one question in particular every so often. They ask should I feel safe using something that is petroleum based. Is it the VOC free synthetic distillates you use that are safer than the distillates used by other companies or is it much more detailed than that?

5A.-Yes, basically it’s the refining process that takes all the VOC's out of the product we use that makes it safe. Its very expensive and hard to emulsify into water based formulas so most companies do not use it and choose to use economical petroleum products instead. I won’t say all do, but a high percentile of manufacturers do and these most certainly will damage a finish over a period of time. If you were to take the straight petroleum distillate some use and apply to your skin and allow evaporating your skin will be dried out. During evaporation, moisture is taken from your skin. Well, clear coats are very delegate these days and the same would happen to it over a period of time. I am sure you have seen from time to time a vehicle that has a stain below or around the gas fill cap where someone has over filled his or her tank. Well, gas is a petroleum and stronger than some used in formulas, but not as much as you may think. Just damages quicker. A surface which has gasoline wiped on will look shinny for a short period of time but as it fully evaporates it takes the moisture with it, damages the clear and looks dried out and faded.

Is Ultima Waterless Wash Plus also VOC and petroleum free? I absolutely love this product and it has effectively replaced all of my QD's, waterless washes, and clay lubricants!

I want to try Ultima Paint Guard Plus but two things have kept me away: the price tag and Duragloss 501. While I see the rationale between making it concentrated and only needing to utilize a 1/4 of an ounce per vehicle, this is a disadvantage to me because I know that I will over apply and use a lot more than a 1/4 of an ounce. I suspect there are others who would fall under the same over usage category.

If you place any value on your time at all the decision is a simple one. At about ten minutes an application, you have paid for the bottle after 2 cars, or sooner.

Whithin a day or two after I arrived in FLorida (12/15/11) I applied a single coat of UPGP to my 2010 Prius. Between then and when I left on 4/12/12 I foam cannoned the car at least 20 times, on the off days I rinsed it with the powerwasher. The last day the finish looked as good as the first.

Ultima is "Clearly Different"

First of all, this thread is AMAZING. I have never said this before, but it is seriously one of the BEST threads I have ever encountered! THANK YOU.

Second of all, I have been using Waterless Wash Plus for around 2 years now, and LOVE IT. It prompted me, before reading this thread, to actually buy Ultimate Paint Guard Protection last week during the Memorial Day No Restrcitions sale, and now, even though the shipment(s) haven't arrived yet, I AM SO EXCITED AND GLAD I PURCHASED THIS AWESOME SPRAY AND WIPE SEALANT.

Best part about it, from what I'm reading, it takes less than an hour to cure, and be totally ready to either add a second coat, or top with carnauba and a spray wax, right!?

I believe the answer is yes. Let me get back with you. I will get the full answer from Rick of Ultima.

First order of 128 oz. of UWW should be on the door stoop when I arrive home! Can't wait!!!

I love this stuff. I use it with a small foam applicator on wheels and it just makes brake dust fly off for months of the time. Also two or three coats on fiberglass really really works well on a boat hull.

SOME OF MY BOXES JUST CAME IN!

I'm excited about using the Ultima Paint Guard Plus. Just so I'm clear on this, I apply it, buff it off, and wait AN HOUR before reapplying a second coat, or, topping with a top-coat of carnauba for added gloss and depth, right? Is this the total curing time for both Ultima's PGP and Chemical Guy's V7 Optical Spray Sealant? I just got both in the mail and want to use Ultima on Paint, and CG on wheels maybe.

Corey's tips for applying UPGP.

Ultima Paint prep plus works as a light polish but also leaves behind a primer for the UPGP. You do not have to use the UPPP. If you don't then you should clean the paint after polishing so the UPGP bonds properly.

Ultima Paint Guard Plus

UPGP is extremely easy to apply. The mistake people make is they apply too much. Apply the UPGP by hand and follow the directions! Below is my method which should not contradict the instructions you receive with the product.

1.-Shake the bottle.

2.-Take a clean microfiber applicator and spray 1 spray onto it to prime it.

3.-Spray it once more and do about a 3 SQ FT area.

4.-Apply in circular motions just making sure to overlap and cover the entire area. You are not polishing so no need to rub too hard or over and over. I always finish with straight lines from front to back of the panel. 3 SQ FT is an estimate. Another thing to look for is that your applicator is no longer leaving anything on the paint. But on certain colors and without really good lighting its sometimes hard to tell anyway. I basically make sure I do about 3 SQ FT. Then I'll wipe over to the side a bit where I know I haven't applied any to see if there is still anything coming off the pad. Fred gave me a tip that is a great idea. When you are no longer sure if anything is on the pad touch your clean window with it and you'll be able to see if there is still product on the applicator.

5.-If I don't see anything then its time for (1) more spritz to the applicator.

6.-Repeat until you get to the last panel. Now just walk away. Their may or may not be a slight film on the paint for a bit but it starts it's bonding process immediately. Now just DO NOT touch Wait 12 hours and inspect. There should be no need to do anything else. This is not a product that you have to buff off. In the unlikely chance that their is a streak somewhere after 12 hours of curing simply take some Ultima QD and spray and wipe the streak with a high quality MF towel.

Notes:

Even though on some colors or in some lighting it seems like you aren't putting anything on your paint just TRUST the product. It will come out great if you don't over apply. I didn't have any trouble at all even the first time but I have read some people apply too much. It is a little disconcerting not always being able to tell if you are putting anything on your paint.
Assuming you have a garage that isn't dusty you can place the second coat after 12 hours. If there is going to be a little dust on the car then I would qd with Ultima QD spray and then add next coat. I place 3 layers of UPGP over the paint. One coat every 12 hours.
