I was fortunate today to get out of work a tad bit early so I rushed home to give my Dodge Ram a much needed clean up. Low and behold as I was finishing up the UPS man came up the driveway with my latest order from PBMG which included a bottle of the new Ultima Tire and Trim Guard UTTG).

I was lucky enough years ago to be one of the beta testers of the Ultima line before it was released to the public. I can remember when Ultima Paint Guard Plus (UPGP) was called RG-49 etc. I have always been a fan of Ultima products since they have released. The products have outstanding durability and are super easy to use.

I have been using the original version of UTTG since it was first released. It has been used on my boat's rubber rub rail for years and after 15 years it still looks brand new ever after sitting in the water every summer. So, I was pretty excited to see how the new formula compared. The boxed was immediately opened products put to the test :)

Thoughts:

1) Love the mini applicator. It fits so much better in small places that the old blue version.
2) Great scent-Kinda of has a mild "menthol" smell to it.
3) UTTG is definitely more watery than the original version. Therefore, it spreads super easy and a little goes a long way
4) UTTG was applied to trim only and seemed to darken it a tad. The directions state that it drys to the touch etc.
5) Durability: I will try and report back on how its holding up on my trucks trim as it sits outside 24/7

All and all I am very happy with new version and it seems to be another hit for the Ultima line.

I'm curious on the durability. The old version was very good. The new version is water based, so I hope it will last as long as the original being that it was solvent based.

I came on to see if anyone else was having issues with the new formula. I bought a bottle of the new formula specifically because I have experience with the old formula and really liked it when compared against a lot of other products. But, after receiving the new bottle I am more than a little disappointed. My experience has been the opposite of yours for some reason.

The new formula takes much more product to cover the same area as before. It is definitely watery and will end up on the floor if not careful when applying to the applicator. I feel like I have to 'rub it in' to get any real coverage (the old formula was more like 'wiping it on').

For me, this new formula takes a lot to go a little way. The old version most definitely fit the description of a little goes a long way. The smell is an exact match to some brand of old 80's lotion or something that my mother use to have in the cabinet (can't quite pin down which one in my mind).

So far, in my opinion, it has just not stood up to the test for me. I literally came off of an old bottle and right into the new bottle and it is not even similar in application. I'm not really speaking on durability, just the actual application of the product. Am I the only one experiencing this?

I am finding that the new formula has performed categorically worse than the original.

Application does not seem to layer at at all. Durability is weak to say the least. Water sheeting is spotty also.

I wish they would move back to the previous formula.

In case you are wondering, yes. I carefully polish and prep my paint before use.

I am afraid that I have to research a new brand or brands to fill these voids. Shame too. The Trim and Tire and PGP are staples for me.

Any suggestions?

They said the change away from the solvent formula was to make shipping less problematic. As far as a replacement, AFAIK the Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant (WETS) is still solvent based. We are talking about trim here, right? Because you mention paint above.

Are you confusing UPG + with UTTG? I believe you are speaking of the paint guard on a trim guard thread. No?

I've recently have been playing with Diluting UTTG to get it to spread better. I put a mix of 50:50 Uttg:Water on my moms Mini cooper, my wifes Cr-v, and did my tires and mudflaps.

-It Definitely spreads a bit easier diluted
-It still beads right off the applicator (red foam) - I will try a microfiber next
-it goes on a bit thinner, on my tires 1st coat was matte 2nd coat was semi-gloss. I like it thinner on trim because it tends to be a bit sticky when its too thick allowing dirt and dist to accumulate. On the trim they darkened slightly and had a nice rich look to it.
-So far no issue with durability
-Less gunk buildup on the pad

:props:

What's the final look like ??? Matte ?? Glossy ???

Sorry about the confusion. I was referring to UPGP in this thread.
