Undercarriage detailing

Anybody else spend alot of time on their suspension like I do? Every car wash I'm lying on my back under the truck wiping it all down with some soap mix and a waffle weave.

I've polished my drive shaft once before but didn't get aggressive enough for my liking. Does AG sell any metal compounds?

Collinite metal wax, p21s polishing soap, or optimum metal polish are some they sell and i like.
 
when i had my lifted ZR2, i was always trying to keep it clean underneath. but with PA winters, it was a pain. i would always undercoat every spring to make it look good.

I live in Ohio so I can relate. But what do you undercoat it with? I just got a new car recently, and plan on taking it to Ziebart to have it undercoated.
 
I do also. About 2 times a year I pull the entire rear suspension, exhaust etc for a clean and protect. The front gets lifted, brakes, rotors etc come off for the same. Everything that stays on gets a good clean and protect. I have those wheels that you can really see through where the spokes are and if it looks crummy then to me it makes the whole car look bad.

Bootstrap.....when you start cleaning all them rubber pieces and treating, then polishing all those brake lines and everything else etc etc then it will really stand out. But....go to far and you won't ever want to drive it.
 
MP has an article on it somewhere.. if I remember right he takes it to a coin-op and sprays it down then parked it in the grass with a sprinkler underneath
 
I got under the front of my truck and with a dewalt grinder and a wire wheel I got all the light surface rust off, primered with self etching primer and then painted. View attachment 23069View attachment 23070

Same thing I did on my frame. Self etching primer and roll bar chasis paint. Wire wheeled with an angle grinder lol. That took 12 hours!! The orange is all powdercoating though.

Thanks klink! I'm actually ordering stainless brake lines tjis next spring. I have the same problem with the wheels showing alot of suspension and the nasty rotors, etc. I use wheel woolies to keep it clean.

Are you using 2x4's to support your chassis? It looks like wood in one of those photos.

Wow! The frame looks awesome! What brand of paint did you use?

I had my Challenger done at Ziebart before I decided to turn it into a garage queen. If I had to do over I wouldn't do it. I think its worthless. Doing alot of mechanical work on it and detailing

it pretty much everywhere I have been able to see how little protection you actually get. I don't even think they lifted the car. Literally the rear shafts and drive shaft were coated on

one side technically throwing it out of balance. They sprayed plastic pieces, plugs and wires. I think it's a scam. I definitely wouldn't do it again. Just my opinion.
 
Undercoating is just horrible. I did it for a while way back. If you do it yourself and do wheel wells, etc... It's OK. When we used to do it at the Ford dealer, we sprayed drive shafts, exhausts, axles, oil/trans pans, calipers, rotors, - whatever. Nobody cared. It was such a mess. It got in your hair, on your skin, - everywhere. All the other cars in the shop at the time got overspray all over them. If someone complained, we just wiped their car down with Ardex solvent.

We loved it though. It payed 1.2 hours flat rate. 0.2 an hour to undercoat and then you spent like a half hour cleaning it up and picking it out of your hair. We were too stupid to wear a hat. Then one day, we came up with "the undercoating hat". Everyone wore this nasty ski hat to undercoat. Eventually, the hat was just undercoating - you couldn't see the actual hat any more. Then a rumor went around someone peed in the hat. So, nobody would wear the hat anymore. It was easy money. I used to take up 3 lifts and hit 3 new cars at once with undercoating. 3.6 hrs in 10 minutes. Then came the clean-up. Pretty soon all the safety latches on the lifts got gunked up with undercoating. Again, nobody cared. We used to take the spring mechanism off the lift lever so we could jamb it up with a brake clean can. That way, you didn't have to worry about the lift bleeding down on top of you since none of the safety locks worked. It was constantly trying to go up.

Most of the undercoating was done at night after the service manager left. Someone would get cases of beer or Mickey's Malt Liquor. There was an old guy there who always had a big bottle of Bushmills. Then we would start undercoating new cars. I remember spraying a bunch of undercoating in a guys beer can and wiping the lid so he would have no idea when he took a sip. After he drank it, he poured like 5 quarts of oil in my tool box. At least it was fresh oil. So, then I got a chain and stole his tool cart. I chained it with a lock to the back of his truck. When he went to pull out to go home, he was dragging his tool cart down Ridge Pike until it flipped over and smashed into the bed.

Ahh.. The good ol days.
